β-Phase Formation of Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) Induced by Liposome Phospholipid Bilayers

Abstract: The well-structured β-phase emission of the neutral poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) is observed in 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) bilayers, either as polydisperse aqueous liposomes or as the lamellar phase in thin films, and has been characterized by absorption, fluorescence (steady-state and time-resolved), and fluorescence anisotropy spectroscopy. Inclusion of PFO in DMPC liposomes provides a way of obtaining the ordered structure of this neutral polymer in aqueous suspensions. Quantifica… Show more

“…[12] Several studies have been reported, including mixing of polyfluorenes with different emissive materials and applying them in single or multiple layers. [13,14] We also know that many polyfluorenes form there own distinct phases in films, commonly known as the beta phase, [15,16,17] thus it is a ideal component of a blend to study. Polythiophenes and their regioregular forms are another class of well-known semiconductor polymers known to show complex morphology and morphological controlled pho-2 tophysics, where side chain structure and quality of solvent/environment also plays a significant role in their photophysical properties.…”

“…The analysis of the diverse types of the interaction involved between DMPC and drugs can be performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a technique widely employed in several studies, because the thermodynamic properties and technical parameters can be accurately and easily monitored. The procedure for the formation of liposomes is relativity simple and allows to use phospholipids of several types as biomembrane models.…”

“…18,19 The mechanism of the formation of the β-phase structure is poorly understood, but it has been found in both films and in solution. 20,21 There is also a third contribution to the emission spectra, a broad emission between 500 and 550 nm. This emission is attributed to either a charge transfer state of F8 or to photo-oxidized F8 keto-states.…”
