β-Papillomaviruses and psoriasis: an intra-patient comparison of human papillomavirus carriage in skin and hair

Abstract: Our data do not support a specific causal role for HPV5 or HPV36 in psoriasis, but suggest that psoriatic skin may be more permissive for viral presence than normal skin. High intra-patient concordance for specific HPV types at separate sites, together with the ubiquity of HPV DNA in normal human skin, suggests that an individual becomes colonized with a particular beta-PV profile presumably to the exclusion of other types. To what extent this HPV profile is then causal in the subsequent development of hyperpr… Show more

“…We observed no association with whole-body actinic keratoses in those with the long-term persistent βPV infections. The association between βPV persistence and actinic keratoses on the head and neck but not with actinic keratoses on the whole body might indicate that βPV in eyebrow hairs is a better marker of infection on the face, neck, and scalp than on the rest of the body, despite a recent study showing that eyebrow hairs are a good marker of cutaneous infection on the body (5,(28)(29)(30). Previous studies of the association between actinic keratosis and βPV did not examine head and neck actinic keratosis in isolation; therefore, comparisons cannot be made.…”

“…55 (37) 76 ( 23 (16) 45 (25) 1.9 (1.1-3.4) a BetaPV DNA in eyebrow hairs has been used as an indicator of skin infection at the site of the lesion, and 2 studies have suggested that the former is indeed a reasonable proxy despite some degree of misclassification (37,41). However, the highly sensitive laboratory test used may result in ascertainment of infections that are present at very low copy number or are only transient.…”

“…Other authors have not been able to establish a link between CMV or human herpes viruses (HHV) 6 and 7 infections and a subsequent development of psoriasis [21]. HPV subtypes 5 and 36 are also pathogenic candidates, although their precise contribution remains to be clarified [22]. Three publications reported guttate psoriasis following varicella [13][14][15].…”
