“…Liver is not only a major source of inflammatory mediator cytokines and free radicals but is also a target organ for their damaging effect (6,19). The oxygen and nitrogen-based reactants contribute to the activation of lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and DNA damage in the liver after burns when its antioxidant defense is reduced (26). This mechanism involves NF-kB induction leading to cytokine-induced inflammation (24,25).…”

“…Furthermore, hepatocytes are much more sensitive to TNF-a damaging effect when their antioxidant capacity is low. TNF-a plays an important role in the occurrence and development of hepatic and cardiac injury in experimental models of thermal trauma (7,26,27). We proved an elevated hepatic TNF-a level accompanied by an increased hepatic NF-KB expression in the burned group.…”

“…Beta glukanın sepsis, yanık gibi durumlarda ortaya çıkan karaciğer hasarını ve MDA seviyesini azalttığını bildiren yayınlar vardır. [27,28] Beta glukanın ayrıca, başka dokulardaki hasarı ve MDA düzeylerini de azalttığı belirlenmiştir. [12] Çalışmamız-da, TS nedeniyle gelişen MDA ve LPO seviyelerindeki artışın, beta glukan tedavisi ile önlendiği görülmek-tedir.…”

“…-glucans are acknowledged to be one of the immune response modifiers [6]. Studies conducted over the past decade have shown that -glucans inhibit tumor development [28,38], enhance defense against bacterial infection [15,24], activate macrophages [8], induce production of cytokines [10,34], nitric oxide (NO) and arachidonic acid metabolites [14,21], increase hematopoiesis [35], exert radioprotective effects [12], are effective against burns [9,37], improve wound healing by inducing the macrophage release of wound growth factors [40] and lower serum lipids [4,23]. Among the several mechanisms proposed for the protective effects of -glucans, the major one is related to antioxidant capacity of the molecules [1,20], which has been further proven by Kogan et al [16] using electron paramagnetic response spectroscopy.…”
