“…The mechanism of action of ␤-blockers in hyperthyroidism is unclear, but principally appears to antagonize overstimulated ␤-AR-mediated signaling. Interestingly, the Ca 2ϩ -lowering effect of propranolol (nonselective ␤-blocker) was proposed to be caused by a direct effect on bone or renal Ca 2ϩ handling (40). In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that dobutamine, a ␤1-AR agonist, stimulates TRPV5 activity via a PKAdependent pathway.…”

“…Hence, potential calciotropic effects of ␤-blockers might further increase chances of developing hypocalcemia in these patients. In addition, ␤-blockers are used to resolve hypercalcemia among other symptoms in hyperthyroidism (39,40). “…The main predictors of heart failure in thyrotoxicosis are free T3 level before treatment, systolic blood pressure, and dilation of left ventricle and to a lesser extent of other heart chambers (13) . Persistent euthyroid state is the most important management of thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy. However, long duration and older age of manifestation are associated with worse prognosis. The initial managementis volume overload reduction with loop diuretics.β-blockersare used for thyrotoxic symptoms alleviation (14) and amiodarone is used in atrial fibrillation treatment (15) .…”

“…The clinical manifestations of thyrotoxicosis are usually mild, compared with other causes of hyperthyroidism, and it is self-limiting (lasting two to six weeks) (2). Therefore, treatment with beta-blockers is recommended only for symptomatic patients (3). Antithyroid drugs, which inhibit the production of new T 4 are not indicated in the management of patients with hyperthyroidism because symptoms are caused by the release of preformed T 3 and T 4 from the damaged gland (4).…”
