β-1,6-Glucan From Pleurotus eryngii Modulates the Immunity and Gut Microbiota

Abstract: Polysaccharides from Pleurotus eryngii exhibit a variety of biological activities. Here, we obtained a homogeneous branched β-1,6-glucan (APEP-A-b) from the fruiting bodies of P. eryngii and investigated its effect on immunity and gut microbiota. Our results showed that APEP-A-b significantly increases splenic lymphocyte proliferation, NK cell activity and phagocytic capacity of peritoneal cavity phagocytes. Furthermore, we found that the proportion of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in lamina propria are significantly … Show more

“…This β-1,6-branched β-1,3-glucan is common in various Pleurotus species, such as P. albidus [ 52 ], P. eryngii [ 53 ], P. ostreatus [ 54 ], P. sajor-caju [ 47 ], among others. Nonetheless, many more β-glucans have been described from other Pleurotus mushrooms, such as linear β-1,3-glucans [ 46 , 48 ] and linear β-1,6-glucans [ 55 ], but also β-1,3/1,6-glucans with α-linked-1,6 substitutions [ 56 ].…”

“…The DCs of CD8 + T and CD56 + NK cells are activated, enhancing the cross-activation of adaptive and innate immune responses [ 32 ]. Polysaccharides from Pleurotus eryngii with a branch of β-1,6-glucan increase the proportion of CD4 T and CD8 T cells to improve immunity [ 33 ]. According to our results, PAPS1 not only enhanced the splenic expressions of CD4, CD8 and CD56 in immunosuppressed mice, but it also increased the IgA and IgM serum levels.…”

“…Cultivated oyster mushrooms of the genus Pleurotus are interesting as a source of biologically active glucans with a variety of bioactivities, with potential use in the field of biomedical sciences [17]. In particular, many of the biological activities of P. eryngii, such as immunostimulating, antitumor, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic, are attributable to polysaccharides [9,13,14,[18][19][20][21][22]. β-glucans from Pleurotus sp.…”
