“…Immunohistochemical expression of ABC was found in 41% of 29 cases of MBC, mainly within the epithelial component as well as in the spindle cell or sarcomatous component in five cases,69 compared with 56% of BLBC, and no ER positive or HER2 positive carcinomas, a finding which has been replicated in some,72 but not other studies70 (the latter including only five cases of MBC).…”

“…It inhibits apoptosis, suppressing the autocatalytic maturation of caspase-367 and preventing the mitochondrial translocation of the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 proteins Bax and Bcl-x s 68. It also has a cytoprotective effect, functioning as a molecular chaperone to inhibit intracellular aggregation of denatured proteins69 and can be induced by stressors including chemotherapy, reactive oxygen species and heat shock 70. ABC overexpression in xenograft models is tumourigeneic, inducing both mesenchymal-like spindle elements and atypical glandular elements with invasive properties, which may indicate a role in EMT 71…”

“…TMAs containing representative areas of breast cancer cases were constructed with duplicated 1.5 μm tissue cores as previously described 24. One section from each TMA was stained with H&E and reviewed to confirm the presence of representative tumours.…”

“…51 In a recent study of ab-crystallin, the sensitivity (56.5%) and specificity (92.9%) for BLBC was found to be higher than those of other basal markers such as CK5/6 and EGFR. 52 These findings suggest that ab-crystallin can serve as a new marker for BLBC and a potential target for therapy.…”
