“…In our previous study (Peričić et al 2001b), idazoxan (1 mg/ kg) and yohimbine (2 mg/kg) inhibited the anticonvulsant properties of swim stress, suggesting that swim stress inhibits the head twitch behaviour and enhances the doses of convulsants needed to produce convulsant signs and death by two separate and independent mechanisms. Our results showing that idazoxan failed to influence, while yohimbine produced a significant stimulation (29%) of 5-HTP-induced head twitch behaviour in unstressed mice, are partly in accordance with the previous studies showing that either one or both of these drugs stimulate the head twitch behaviour (Handley and Brown 1982;Heal et al 1986;Matsumoto et al 1997).…”

“…Moreover, the selective α 2 -adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine prevents the effect of ketanserin and clonidine. The α 2 -adrenoceptor effect on the 5-HT 2 -receptor-induced head-twitch behaviour has been suggested to be mediated by post-synaptic site of central noradrenergic nerve terminals (Matsumoto et al 1997).…”

“…at an experimentally determined (see Results) non-sedating dose of 0.01 mg kg −1 , a dose also reported to be effective in suppressing seroMolecular Psychiatry tonergic drug-induced head-twitches. 31 Clonidine was administered in an injection volume of 10 ml kg −1 body weight. Mice were individually videotaped over 15 min, after 15 min of habituation to a new cage and 30 min after clonidine or placebo (i.p.…”
