α-Glucosidase Inhibitory and Antioxidant Activities of DifferentIpomoea aquaticaCultivars and LC-MS/MS Profiling of the Active Cultivar

Abstract: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of Ipomoea aquatica extracted using water and methanol at various concentrations on the total phenolics, antioxidant capacity, and α‐glucosidase inhibitory activities. Three I. aquatica cultivars were used in this study including the upland type with narrow leaves (K‐11), low‐land aquatic types with broader shaped leaves (K‐25), and bamboo‐shaped leaves (K‐88). The results revealed that 70% methanol extract of K‐11 showed higher total phenolic content an… Show more

“…LC-MS was used to detect the metabolites present in the leaf fractions from C. nutans , as described by Lawal et al [13] with slight modifications. The samples were analyzed using the Q-TOF LC-MS system, Agilent 1290 Infinity, and 6550 iFunnel Q-TOF LC/MS (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, California) equipped with an electrospray (ESI) interface comprising both positive and negative ion modes.…”

“…Among the treatments available for diabetes, the inhibition of α-glucosidase is one of them, which is responsible for glucose breakdown in the intestinal wall [17]. Plants' phenolic compounds have been reported to have the ability in inhibiting this enzyme, yet more often, modern drugs can be prescribed to combat the occurrence of inflammation-related diseases and diabetes [18]. However, prolonged use of these drugs stimulates unwanted side effects towards the liver, kidney, and other organs [19].…”

“…scolymus (globe artichoke; Moglia et al, 2016), and Helianthus annuus L. (sunflower; Sun et al, 2012) in the family Asteraceae; Solanum lycopersicum L. (tomato) and Nicotiana tabacum L. (tobacco) in the family Solanaceae (Niggeweg et al, 2004); Coffea spp. (coffee; Lallemand et al, 2012) in the family Rubiaceae; and Ipomoea batatas L. (sweet potato; Kojima and Kondo, 1985) and Ipomoea aquatica (water spinach; Lawal et al, 2016) in the family Convolvulaceae. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertension, and antimicrobial properties of CQAs are well documented by previous studies.…”
