“…The present case showed prominent granulomatous reaction with the presence of many scattered multinucleated giant cells containing phagocytosed crystalloids. This case, which shows relatively similar cytomorphological features to that described by Kuwabara et al, 1 is the first reported in a submandibular salivary gland FNA and therefore brings total number of crystalloid granuloma cases to 6. It is likely that such a response occurs following rupture of salivary ducts and release of the crystalloids into the salivary gland parenchyma inducing florid granulomatous response.…”

“…The extent to which infectious agents are responsible for the formation of crystalloids is not clear, as some cases show resolution following a course of antibiotics, some resolve spontaneously and some recur in spite of antibiotic use and require surgical excision. All the previously reported crystalloid granuloma cases underwent surgical resection, though preoperative diagnosis was made by FNA in a case reported by Kuwabara et al 1 However, in the current case, resolution of the swelling and the symptoms occurred following conservative management. Therefore operative management may not be necessary in all cases of crystalloid granuloma.…”

“…Several types of crystalloids may be seen in fine needle aspiration cytology of benign or malignant lesions of the salivary gland. [ 1 2 ] Due to their rarity, they may lead to confusion in diagnosis. Amylase type crystalloids (sometimes named nontyrosine crystals) are rarely found angular, nonbirefringent rectangular formed structures, with geometric shapes ranging between 5 μ and 500 μ in size and stained orange with Papanicolaou (PAP), dark blue with Diff-Quik ® (DQ) and pink with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) stain.…”
