Zygosaccharomyces favi sp. nov., an obligate osmophilic yeast species from bee bread and honey

Abstract: Five yeast strains representing a hitherto undescribed yeast species were isolated from bee bread and honey in Hungary. They are obligate osmophilic, i.e. they are unable to grow in/on high water activity culture media. Following isogamous conjugation, they form 1-4 spheroid or subspheroid ascospores in persistent asci. The analysis of the sequences of their large subunit rRNA gene D1/D2 domain placed the new species in the Zygosaccharomyces clade. In terms of pairwise sequence similarity, Zygosaccharomyces ga… Show more

“…To date, several Zygosaccharomyces sp. have occasionally been found in the beehive environment 48 , but high abundance of Zygosaccharomyces in the queen gut has not been reported. Since the queen consumes the royal jelly, a mainly fructose- and glucose-containing acidic fluid 49 , and the queen’s gut microbiota is dominated by Alpha-2.2 and Lactobacillus 14 , 18 , 46 , the queen gut seems to contain acidic substances and metabolites, such as acetic acid and lactic acid.…”

“…Drosophila melanogaster is a vector of a yeast-community in banana fruits, where their larvae develop 38 . Fungi in the genus Zygosaccharomyces have been previously reported from other bees, including bumblebees 39 , honeybees 40 , 41 , and stingless bees 41 , 42 . The Zygosaccharomyces strains associated with S. depilis from this study form a monophyletic group that is the sister group to a lineage that includes several bee-associated Zygosaccharomyces spp.…”

“…NaCl) and sugar are most common. Candida glucosophila and Zygosaccharomyces favi are regarded as osmophilic species because they require reduced water activity for growth (Čadež, Fülöp, Dlauchy, & Péter, ; Lachance, Boekhout, Scorzetti, Fell, & Kurtzman, ).…”
