Zwitterionic hydrogels have been explored for applications in electrochemical devices very recently due to their high water retention ability and interesting electrochemical properties. The use of zwitterionic hydrogels in devices requires them tough and recoverable or healable from fatigue damage. Herein, a double network zwitterionic hydrogel contains a reversible noncovalent interaction crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) first network, together with a covalent/noncovalent hybrid crosslinked acrylamide and sulfobetaine methacrylate copolymer (P(AM-co-SBMA)) second network, was fabricated by a simple two-steps methods of copolymerization and freezing/thawing. The reversible hydrogen bonds, crystalline domain, and electrostatic interactions in the double networks work as sacrificial bonds to dissipate energy and toughen the materials when hydrogel deforms. The broken bonds can reform upon unloading endowing the recovery of hydrogels' properties with the assistance of the elastic covalent network. The optimal hydrogels are highly stretchable (fracture strain 970%), tough (fracture toughness 693 kJ m −3 ), rapidly recoverable (65% toughness recovery and 75% stiffness recovery after resting 5 min at room temperature) and with widely tunable mechanical properties by multibond crosslinking. Meanwhile, the zwitterionic counterions of SBMA moieties endow the tough and recoverable hydrogels extremely high intrinsic ionic conductivities (7.49 S m −1 ) at room temperature. This work not only provides a simple strategy for fabricating tough and recoverable zwitterionic hydrogels but also demonstrates multifunctional properties of the zwitterionic hydrogels, which possess a great potential to fulfill flexible devices applications.

The self‐healing behaviors of sulfobetaine amphoteric polyacrylamide/chromium (SPAM/Cr) gel are investigated. The role of chemical composition, including different types of polyacrylamide, acid, and sodium sulfate, in the gel synthesis process as well as the gel's self‐healing ability are studied and compared. It is found that the chemical structure with electrostatic discharge repulsion and hydrophobic interaction of amphoteric polyacrylamide play the key roles in the gelation and self‐healing processes. Furthermore, lactic acid cannot only adjust the pH value of the system, but also help to form organic chromium, which can coordinate with the COO group to form the crosslinked gel. The concentration of sodium sulfate can affect self‐healing behaviors via electric charge as well. A best concentration range of 220–1600 mg/L is found to provide the maximum self‐healing ability in the SPAM/Cr gel at 45 °C for 72 h. The oil field experimental results for the S5‐10‐P50 well group show that the viscosity recovery rate of the SPAM/Cr gel is greater than 66% after 60 days, and the average starting pressure increases about 1–3 MPa after profile control. The results demonstrate that self‐healing SPAM/Cr gel is a type of high‐efficiency gel that can be used for depth water plugging and profile control in oil fields. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. We report here a novel anti-biodegradable hydrophobic acrylamide copolymer that was prepared from acrylamide, acrylic acid, sodium 3-(allyloxy)-2-hydroxypropane-1-sulfonate and N-allyl-2-(2,4dichlorophenoxy) acetamide using the 2,2 0 -azobis(2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride initiation system. Subsequently, the copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, TG-DTG and watersolubility. And the biodegradability test indicated that the copolymer was not deemed to be readily biodegradable via a closed bottle test established by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD 301 D). Meanwhile the copolymer could significantly enhance the viscosity of the aqueous solution in comparison with partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide. A viscosity retention of 51.9% indicated the result of a dramatic improvement of temperature tolerance. And then the excellent salt resistance, shear resistance, viscoelasticity, long-term stability of the copolymer could be obtained, which provides a good theoretical foundation for the application in enhanced oil recovery. In addition, this copolymer exerted stronger mobility control ability with a resistance factor of 22.1 and a residual resistance factor of 5.0, and superior ability for enhanced oil recovery of 12.9%. Hence, the copolymer has potential application for enhanced oil recovery in high-temperature and high-salinity reservoirs.
