The preservation of infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. The current reactive maintenance management only initiates maintenance measures after damage has occurred. Short‐term measures can lead to unforeseen restrictions in infrastructure availability and thus cause high social and economic damage.High‐quality measurement technology, automated data analysis, structured data management and collaborative work are just a few technological developments that form the cornerstones for a future predictive maintenance strategy. The digital twin, a digital representation of the real object, combines these developments and is a promising method for a sustainable preservation of infrastructure.Using the example of the Filstal bridges, a concept for a digital bridge twin is introduced. The digital twin combines measurement data, bridge information, inspection results as well as structural safety verifications and aggregates them to continuously display the current bridge condition and thus supports the maintenance of bridges. For intuitive use, all information is located and presented in a way that is consumable by the user.

There are about 65,000 bridge structures in the infrastructure network of the Federal Republic of Germany. Due to the long operating phase of bridges, they have an influence on sustainability. To evaluate the sustainability of bridges in the operational phase, digital building models can serve as a consistent and structured database to increase the efficiency and transparency.In this article, an innovative evaluation system for measuring and assessing the sustainability of a bridge structure in the operational phase based on a digital bridge twin is developed. First, the workflow is presented in a process model and the necessary requirements for the digital twin of the bridge structure are defined. In addition, the semi‐automatic sustainability assessment system is described and the linkage via an interoperable interface to the digital twin is designed. The approach is tested and validated using a real demonstrator. The result of the paper shows an approach to use digital twins for a novel and semi‐automatic sustainability assessment in the operation of bridge structures.

Historische Eisenbahnbrücken stehen aufgrund ihrer bautechnikgeschichtlichen Bedeutung und der Anforderung nach Erneuerung immer wieder im Spannungsfeld zwischen Denkmalpflege und Baupraxis; das erklärte Ziel aller Beteiligten sollte es aber sowohl aus der Perspektive des kulturellen Erbes als auch aus der der Ressourcenökonomie sein, sie zu erhalten und weiter zu nutzen. Es wird herausgestellt, dass historische Eisenbahnbrücken im Kontext ihres Netzes zu betrachten sind, da ihre primäre Funktion die Überführung einer Strecke darstellt. Aufgrund dieser Funktion ist ein notwendiges Maß an Veränderbarkeit auch bei jenen Eisenbahnbrücken zu gewährleisten, die unter Denkmalschutz stehen. Durch die notwendigen Veränderungen müssen immer wieder Brücken ersetzt werden. Dabei ist auffällig, dass die Struktur der erneuerten Bauweisen in ihrer konstruktiven und gestalterischen Diversität abnimmt. Auch im Sinne der Nachhaltigkeit sollten Eisenbahnbrücken geschützt und gleichzeitig veränderbar sein, damit die einzelnen Bauwerke möglichst lange erhalten bleiben. Schonung von Ressourcen durch Erhaltung statt Abbruch und Neubau können Hand in Hand mit den Zielen der Denkmalpflege gehen, wenn dabei materielle und ideelle Ressourcen für kommende Generationen erhalten bleiben. Die drei Kriterien der Nachhaltigkeit werden hier für den Eisenbahnbrückenbau überprüft. Abschließend werden Beispiele für eine erfolgreiche Erhaltung und eine gelungene Erneuerung aufgezeigt.
