Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a naturally occurring anticarcinogen found in dairy products, is an intermediary product of ruminal biohydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Few data exist on the CLA content of the human blood plasma. The determination of a "normal" content could help in estimating if a person consumes satisfactory amounts of CLA with the diet and thus takes advantage of its potential beneficial effects on health. The purpose of this study was to compare the plasma CLA content of individuals not consuming dairy products (group 1, n = 12), individuals consuming normal amounts of dairy products (group 2, n = 77) and individuals consuming CLA supplement (group 3, n = 12). The only CLA isomer that presented higher percentage than the detection limit (0.03% of total fatty acids) was rumenic acid (cis9, trans11-octadecadienoic acid). An interesting finding is that compared to the other two groups, group 3 members show the highest average plasma content in rumenic acid, i.e. 0.20% of total fatty acids. The present study could be characterized as the first step in the direction of establishing a normal CLA content of human plasma. Based on these results, it could be suggested that the lower limit of the plasma CLA content is approximately 0.1% of total fatty acids.

Die als nachgewiesen geltende nutritive Essentialit& der o-3-Fettsauren Eicosapentaensaure (EPA) und Docosahexaensaure (DHA) und deren positive Wukung bei Prophylaxe und Therapie, vor allem bei kardiovaskulken Krankheiten hat zu einer Erhohung der Markt-und medizinischen Bedeutung der Fischolkapseln und des Fischkonsums gefiihrt. Es wurden aus diesem Grunde 26 Fischolkapsel-Praparate gaschromatographisch auf ihre Fettsaurenzusammensetzung, EPA-und DHA-Gehalt untersucht. Das Ziel warder Nachweis von Herkunfi und Provenienz der Fischole sowie evtl. von deren Vermischungen mit anderen Fetten und 61en. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse lassen 23 Praparate als Fischole bzw. Fischol-Konzentrate und 3 Praparate als Fischolfettsaurenethylester-Konzentrate erkennen. Irgendwelche Vermischungen mit anderen Speiseolen konnten mit ziemlicher Sicherheit ausgeschlossen werden. Die meisten der Fischol-Kapseln (= 20 Praparate), auch die als Lachsolkapseln deklarierten, enthielten ca. 30% w-3-Fettsauren in einem Mengenverhdtnis von EPA : DHA von ca. 3 : 2. Dieses Mengenverhdtnis entspricht einem Konzentrat aus Fischol japanischer Provenienz. Andere Fischol-Provenienzen waren nur bei einzelnen Kapseln identifiiierbar. Hohere Konzentrationen an o-3-Fettsauren von ca. 50% weisen die drei Fischolfettstiurenethylester enthaltenden Kapseln auf. Bei diesen Kapseln betragt das EPA : DHA-Mengenverhdtnis ca. 3 : 2.

Alle in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland iiber die Apotheke erhlltlichen Fischolkapselnzur Zeit 27 Praparatewurden auf ihre Qualitat hinsichtlich Gehalt an Cholesterin, lipophilen Vitaminen. oxidierten und polymeren Anteilen sowie Kontamination des Fischols mit Organochlorpestiziden, polychlorierten Biphenylen (PCB), Schwermetallen und polycyclischen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen (PAH) untersucht. Das Ziel war, die an uns von vielen Arzten gestellten Fragen iiber Gehalt von Fischolkapseln an Cholesterin, Vitamin A , Vitamin D und Vitamin E zu beantworten und andererseits zu ermitteln, ob die Fischolkapseln die Lebensmittelverordnung, die Richtlinien von Codex-Alimentarius und die Richtlinien der Fettindustrie erfullen. Die meisten Prtiparate weisen einen Oxidationsgrad von ca. 20 %, einen Gehalt an polymeren Triglyceriden von 2 -3.5 % und einen Cholesteringehalt von 0.3 -0.6% auf. Die Kapseln weisen mit wenigen Ausnahmen kein Vitamin A auf. Dagegen liegt die Konzentration der meisten Prtiparate bei Vitamin E zwischen ca. 600 bis ca. 7000 pg/g und bei Vitamin D zwischen 15 bis ca. 100 IElg. Die Kontamination der Kapseln mit Organochlorpestiziden. PCB und Schwermetallen entsprach der normalen Belastung von Fischolen mit solchen ubiquitiiren Schadstoffen, d . h.. daB die meisten Muster die gesetzlichen Richtlinien erfiillten, und daO nur Einzelproben die Hachstgrenzen iiberschritten. Die Kontamination der meisten Kapseln mit Benzo(a)pyren und anderen PAH entsprach dagegen nicht den Richtlinien.* Vortrag anlaDlich der 46. DGF-Vortragstagung All medicinal fish oil capsules available in German market, viz. 27 products, were examined w.r.t. their cholesterol-and lipophilic vitamine contents as well as oxidised and polymer fractions. Moreover, the possible contamination of the fish oils with organochloric pesticides. polychlorinated biphenyles (PCB), heavy metals and polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) was also examined. O u r objective was to answer the enquires made to us by many physicians regarding the content of fish oil capsules w.r.1. cholesterol, vitamin A , vitamin D and vitamin E. At the same time we also ascertained, the extent to which these therapeutic products, conformed to the existing food legislation, the guidelines of Codex-Alimentanus and those of the fat processing industry. We found that, most of these products had a degree of oxidation amounting to abt. 20%. a 2 -3.5 % polymeric triglyceride content and a cholesterol content between 0.3 -0.6 %. The capsules contained, with very small exceptions, no vitamin A. Contrary to this, the vitamin E concentration of most products were between abt. 600 to abt. 7000 pg/g and 15 to abt. 100 IU/g vitamin D respectively. The contamination of the capsules with organochlorine pesticides, PCB and heavy metals was in line with normal level of such pollutants in fish oil, i.e. most products conformed to legal guidelines and only a few exceeded the limits.
