Certain members of the phytotropin class of auxin transport inhibitors are shown to bind with high affinity to the known naphthylphtlamlc aid binding sites in maize (Zea mays) coleoptiles. The binding site Is, thus, a phytotropin binding site. In general, the degree of binding correlates with the phytotropin structure activity rules and with physiological activities of model compounds. It is argued that the binding site may be a receptor, and it also may be the receptor involved in the control of the auxin transport process. The possibility is raised that the binding sites may be intrinsic receptors for endoanalog(s) of the phytotropins.

Water is famous for its anomalies, most of which become dramatic in the supercooled region, where the liquid is metastable with respect to the solid. Another metastable region has been hitherto less studied: the region where the pressure is negative. Here we review the work on the liquid in the stretched state. Characterization of the properties of the metastable liquid before it breaks by nucleation of a vapour bubble (cavitation) is a challenging task. The recent measurement of the equation of state of the liquid at room temperature down to − 26 MPa opens the way to more detailed information on water at low density. The threshold for cavitation in stretched water has also been studied by several methods. A puzzling discrepancy between experiments and theory remains unexplained. To evaluate how specific this behaviour is to water, we discuss the cavitation data on other liquids. We conclude with a description of the ongoing work in our groups.

Division and growth of most types of in vitro-cultured plant cells require an external source of auxin. In such cultures, the ratio of external to internal auxin concentration is crucial for the regulation of the phases of the standard growth cycle. In this report the internal concentration of auxin in suspension-cultured cells of Nicotiana tabacum L., strain VBI-0, was manipulated either (i) by increasing 10-fold the normal concentration of 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in the external medium; or (ii) by addition 1-N-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA; an inhibitor of auxin efflux and of auxin efflux carrier traffic). Both treatments delayed the onset of cell division for 6-7 days without loss of cell viability. In both cases, cell division activity subsequently resumed coincident with a reduction in the ability of cells to accumulate [(3)H]NAA from an external medium. Following renewed cell division, a significant proportion of the NPA-treated cells but not those grown at high auxin concentration, exhibited changes in the orientation of new cell divisions and loss of polarity. We conclude that cell division, but not cell elongation, is prevented when the internal auxin concentration rises above a critical threshold value and that the directed traffic of auxin efflux carriers to the plasma membrane may regulate the orientation of cell divisions.
