The German Democratic Republic has more than 17 million inhabitants. Nearly 9,000 dentists and 33,000 physicians, more than 700 of whom are dermatovenereologists, care for them. Medical attention is free of charge under the National Health Service. The costs of diagnostics, treatment, and drugs are covered by the social insurance. Everybody has to pay a certain officially fixed contribution. The large number of beds at dermato-venereologic wards has been reduced in the last ten years, so that medical attention has been shifted from in-patient to out-patient care. Diagnostics and therapy have been standardized in several fields, thus a more scientific basis and a greater rationalization has been reached.Dermato-venereology is taught at the medical faculties of six universities as well as at three medical academies. After the study of medicine had been thoroughly reformed in its contents and curricula, the students are trained uniformly according to precise teaching programs is the whole country. Altogether we have 52 lessons for dermato-venereology, among them 38 lessons as lectures and 14 lessons as seminars in smaller groups in the seventh and eighth terms of the study. The examination takes place at the end of the tenth term. To become a specialist in dermatology, one has to work at a dermatologic department with appropriate facilities according to integrated and specified programs for four years. At the end of this time an examination has to be passed. Address for reprints: Uwe-Frithjof Haustein, M.D., Department of Dermatology, Karl Marx University, GDR 7010 Leipzig, Liebigstr. 21.Dermatologic research has been characterized by the application of new methods in the past 5 to 10 years, so that numerous problems could be dealt with successfully, adapted to our national conditions, and introduced into practice. Apart from early diagnosis and therapy, one of our main targets is the prevention of common diseases such as contact dermatitis, pyodermas, mycoses, and sexually transmitted diseases. Dermatology papers by authors from the GDR in the last five years are so numerous that the analysis of each publication is impossible in this short review. Because of the wide variety of subjects, we have selected papers representing our main working fields and the current trends. Contact DermatitisBesides epidemiologic studies our main targets are the elaboration and standardization of predictive tests for the allergenic potency and the irritative effect of substances as well as of fitness criteria. We aim to improve the prophylactic work in prevention of occupational dermatoses. The following allergens are very frequent: rubber ingredients, chromate, plastics, disinfectants, and drugs.Schubert and Zschunke' reported on the most common chemicals as causes of acknowledged occupational dermatoses based on the statistics in medical-staffpersonnel, rubber-industry, agriculture, hairdressers, and metal-industry. Relations between dose and effect, and the existence of nonsensitizing levels with regard to allergic eczema are discus...
