“…This effect was sustained even 6 weeks after the end of the treatment. Similar positive effects with the use of sulfur mud baths and other ingredients in myofascial pain syndromes and ®bromyalgia could be demonstrated by several authors (37,38). Samborski and Stratz (39), however, reported an increase in pain reported by FM patients after therapy with hot mud packs.…”

“…Pratzel et al [10] showed the superiority of sulfurated baths without mud over tap water baths for tendomyopathy. In contrast to Saller et al [14] and the present study where a VAS was used to assess pain intensity, Pratzel et al [12,13] and Lehmann and de Lateur [15] used the minimum pressure to induce pain sensation on trigger points for assessing alterations in the pain threshold and thereby indirectly the pain relief. Sukenik et al demonstrated the efficacy of sulfurated baths [7,11] and mud application [7] in reducing e. g. morning stiffness and subjective disease severity but did not measure pain intensity, and the control groups did not undergo balneotherapeutic treatment.…”

“…This is true for a single bath as well as for a series of baths. The superiority of sulfurated mud baths over tap water baths in respect to pain relief has also been demonstrated in osteoarthritis and spondylosis [13,14] as well as in muscle pain [12]. Pratzel et al [10] showed the superiority of sulfurated baths without mud over tap water baths for tendomyopathy.…”

“…Plain water baths modify the pain intensity, medicinal baths improve well-being and sleep. [10,11]. Eine kontrollierte Untersuchung u È ber den Effekt einer Thermalbadbehandlung [19] bei Fibromyalgiepatienten fand noch 6 Wochen nach Therapie signifikant geringere Schmerzen und eine erho È hte Druckschmerzschwelle als bei den unbehandelten Kontrollpatienten.…”
