ZSM-5 Supported Cobalt Catalyst for the Direct Production of Gasoline Range Hydrocarbons by Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract: Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction for the direct production of gasoline range hydrocarbons (C 5 -C 9 ) from syngas was investigated on cobalt-based FTS catalyst supported on the ZSM-5 possessing a four different Si/Al ratio. The FTS catalysts were prepared by impregnation method using cobalt nitrate precursor in a slurry of ZSM-5, and they were characterized by surface area, XRD, H 2 -TPR and NH 3 -TPD. Cobalt supported catalyst on ZSM-5 having a low Si/Al ratio of 15 was found to be superior to the oth… Show more

“…In addition to the two main reduction peaks, a third peak at around 650°C (peak III) was also observed for Co/ZS-50 and Co/ZS-100, being more apparent on the latter. This might be caused by the reduction of more stable species, such as cobalt aluminate or cobalt silicate on the ZSM-5 support [45]. The high CH 4 selectivity of FTS over Co/ZS-0 and the large amount of C 23+ production over Co/ZS-100 were consistent with the literature report [24] that the CH 4 selectivity was enhanced on the CoO surface and the high reducibility of Co 3 O 4 was beneficial to the production of long-chain hydrocarbons.…”

“…5. As stated in literature [31,32], there are two typical reduction steps under the flow of H 2 for cobalt and nickelbased catalysts corresponding to v 3 O 4 ? vO, and then ) which implied that the interaction between support and metal oxides is weaker [33].…”

“…The observed peak within the range of 200-400°C relates to a medium acidity site of the catalyst. The appeared peaks upon the 500°C also are due to the strong acidity sites [14,32,34]. For each catalyst three acid sites with different strengths expressed as the ammonia uptake are observed.…”

“…Various metal promoters such as alkali, alkali earth elements, and rare earth elements were reported to increase the activity of alumina supported cobalt catalyst. These metal additives would improve the interaction of Al 2 O 3 support with Co oxide and thereby increase the Co reducibility and the number of active Co metal sites [7][8][9][10][11][12][13].…”
