SummarySubject and purpose of work: The article presents the results of a study which aimed to elicit the opinions of the residents of Polish cities belonging to the Cittaslow Network.Materials and methods: The surveys were conducted among 100 residents from 10 Polish Cittaslow cities.Results: Most of the respondents did not identify the city’s accession to the Cittaslow with the improvement of the quality of their lives. The residents’ opinions concerning the changes that occurred after joining the Network depended on their gender, age and education.Conclusions: The survey results have revealed that the membership of the Cittaslow is strictly promotional. Its main objective is to raise funds from projects that promote the idea of Cittaslow as well as to get a promotion by participating in various international events. The opinions of the inhabitants of Cittaslow cities indicate the lack of significant effects established in relevant documents and strategies.

Potential and barriers to the development of small and medium-sized towns on the example of Polish Cittaslow Network Small and medium-sized towns play an essential role in local development and they are a vital element of the settlement network. They are service centers and places where local economic activity concentrates. In order to strengthen the potential, counteract negative social-economic phenomena, increase economic activity and achieve common goals, the towns form associations and start cooperation. Cittaslow is one of the examples of such activities. It is an international network that implements the idea of Slow City which concentrates on the improvement in the quality of life, economic development, particular care of the environment and promotion of local products. It operates according to the sustainable development rules. The aim of the research is to classify towns which are members of Polish Cittaslow Network according to their level of development and indicate potential and barriers in the development of the selected settlement units. In the research, a range of factors such as demographic, socioeconomic and spatial-functional factors were considered. The diversity research was conducted with the use of mathematical-statistical method and the taxonomy method. As a result, Cittaslow towns were classifi ed into typological groups of various level of development. Moreover, the role of the Cittaslow network in local and regional development was discussed and barriers and potential in the development of towns which especially stand out among Polish Cittaslow Network were indicated. The results showed that Cittaslow towns are marked with a considerable diversifi cation in the level of development and potentials and barriers to development.

Research background: The fast pace of life of contemporary people living in developed countries results in a search for peace and relaxation, which is reflected in new forms of tourism. One of them is slow tourism, which is at an early stage of development. A new type of tourist is emerging – one who is conscious, responsible, critical, respectful of nature, open to learning about the customs, culture and religion of local populations. Purpose: This paper analyses the changes that take place in tourism from a socio-economic perspective, characterized by withdrawing from mass tourism and a shift towards individual tourism, with particular emphasis on slow tourism. Research methodology: The paper is based on a compilation of the current literature of the subject, reports and analysis of Polish websites devoted to slow travel. It is a synthesis of economic and social aspects of slow tourism development, including the motives for taking up slow tourism by tourists and the offer of slow travel in Poland. Results: The analysis of the literature reveals a large diversity in the definition of slow tourism. A lively discussion is going on regarding the meaning of the new trend, its importance and future. In Poland, slow tourism is becoming increasingly popular, as evidenced by, among others: an increase in the number of offers for slow tourists. Novelty: This analysis contributes to deepening the knowledge on new trends in tourism – slow tourism. These considerations contribute to the author’s further research on the development of this phenomenon.
