Zooplankton Competition and Predation: An Experimental Test of the Size‐Efficiency Hypothesis

Abstract: A.bstrac~ .. Twelve 42-li~er plankton :ages were used in an alpine Colorado pond to test the stze-efft:Ienc~ hypothests: to determme why small herbivorous zooplankton species tend not to coextst Wtth large species. The size-efficiency hypothesis, that large species exclude the smaller ones through competition for food, was not substantiated. An alternate hypothesis exten?s the understanding of the importance of size-selective predators to include invertebrates se~ectmg small prey. A p~ed.aceous copepod Diaptom… Show more

“…According to pioneer studies (Brooks and Dodson, 1965), small-sized zooplankton would dominate when planktivorous fish are abundant, and large-sized plankton when invertebrate predators predominate (Dodson, 1974), as summarized by Lampert and Sommer (2007;in Fig. 6.33).…”

“…Several species of Daphnia are recognized as efficient herbivores (Dodson, 1974). The negative correlation between D. laevis and chlorophyll-a emphasizes the herbivory pressure of this cladoceran on the phytoplankton community.…”

“…Thus, the larger zooplankters were more abundant in fish-present lakes. The presence in the systems of Chaoborus larvae, which are selective predators able to structure the zooplankton community (Dodson 1974;Fedorenko 1975a;Pope and Carter 1975;Neill 1981), could explain the observed patterns. Thus, brook trout was not the sole predator of zooplankton because Chaoborus larvae were important planktivores in fishless lakes.…”
