Zooplankton community dynamics in relation to the seasonal cycle and nutrient inputs in an urban tropical estuary in Brazil

Abstract: Micro-and mesozooplankton were studied in the Sergipe estuary, northeastern Brazil, in order to assess the temporal variability in abundance and biodiversity under stressed conditions (urban pollution). Zooplankton samples and abiotic data were collected at one station during a full tidal cycle in July 2001 and in February 2002, corresponding to the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. The salinity regime was euhaline-polyhaline. Phosphate and dissolved oxygen were higher in July 2001, and nitrite, nitrate and… Show more

“…The condition might be important to maintain the composition of plankton species in the Sungai Pulai estuary. The copepods could be more influenced by the diet brought in by the sea current and tide (Araujo et al 2008;Ara et al 2011). These include diet such as the detritus (preferred by Acartia sp.)…”

“…4). Dominant in most Brazilian coastal areas (Magalhães et al 2009b; Eskinazi-Sant'Anna and Björnberg 2006), P. quasimodo is a marine-euryhaline species, occurring preferentially in waters of high salinity in tide-dominated areas (Lopes et al 1998;Araújo et al 2008). However, the opposite tendency was observed in the Taperaçu estuary, where the highest density of this species was recorded during the period of lowest salinity.…”

“…Mots clés -réservoir sub-tropical, Asie du sud-est, Copépodes, hétérogénéité spatiale, mélange primary and secondary producers are key components of this new ecosystem, influencing the entire food web (Hairston & Fussman, 2002;Rennella & Quirós, 2006;Araujo et al, 2008). The understanding of the temporal and spatial evolution of zooplankton community appears all the most important that newly created reservoirs play an important role for the local populations depending primarily on fish as protein resources.…”
