Zooarchaeology of the layers from Dorochivtsy III (Ukraine)

Abstract: a b s t r a c tPalaeolithic archaeological sites of the Western Ukraine are clustered along the Prut and Dniester Rivers. Different sites provided data enabling reconstruction of the paleoenvironment, chronology and cultures of human group during the Upper Paleolithic (notably Molodova V). During the second part of the Pleniglacial, between 23 000 and 20 000 years BP, palaeoclimatic variations took place. The intensification of cold and arid conditions is liable to force human groups to adapt to a changing env… Show more

“…We stress that these structures were made not only with bones from hunted animals, but also with bones that had been collected in the surrounding landscape (Soffer et al, 1997; Iakovleva and Djindjian, 2005; Demay et al, 2012). Also to be emphasized is the fact that besides the sites abounding in mammoth remains, numerous other Gravettian and Epigravettian sites indicate that people depended on other mammal species for subsistence (Vörös, 2000; Iakovleva and Djindjian, 2005; Vlačiky, 2009; Musil, 2010; Wojtal et al, 2012, 2016; Demay et al, 2015, 2016; Wilczyński et al, 2015a, 2015b).…”

“…The layers 6-3 were more quickly buried, well protected, but with some soil move ments in particular in layer 6. The index numbers of correlation linked to the skeletal preservation and bone density of these four layers do not show differential preservation due to naturel processes of dispersion neither due to predator (s) (Demay et al 2015).…”
