Zonation of the Siberian Ordovician deposits based on pelagic groups of fauna

Abstract: We summarize data on the biostratigraphic units of the Siberian Ordovician deposits based on pelagic groups of fauna: graptolites, conodonts, and chitinozoans. It is shown that graptolite and conodont zones and beds have a high potential for correlation. We have determined the precise zonal position of most of the lower boundaries of the Ordovician stages and informal Ordovician substages of the International Stratigraphic Chart in the Lower Paleozoic key sections of the Taimyr Peninsula, Siberian Platform, an… Show more

“…Other material mentioned is stored in the Natural History Museum, London, UK (NHMUK). Global stages and subdivisions follow Bergstr€ om et al (2009) while the Siberian stages and correlations are based on Sennikov et al (2015) and Kanygin et al (2017). Although the units applied here may represent 'horizons' in Russian terminology ($stages in non-Russian terminology), they are treated as stratigraphical formations (see discussion in Ebbestad & Fortey 2019).…”

“…The single limestone bed yielded trilobites, ostracodes, brachiopods and gastropods. The unit encompasses the N. gracilis to C. clingani graptolite zones (Sennikov et al 2015), and the specimens collected are probably from the lower zone.…”

“…4 ) are tied to the Siberian regional stages 43 44 . However, these stages are problematic to correlate to the international Ordovician stages, since they are largely based on endemic shelly faunas 45 46 . In contrast, data from the Mójcza 47 and the Gullhögen sections 48 have a well-defined conodont-based biostratigraphy.…”
