Zircon U-Pb and fission-track ages of granitic rocks from the Nojima Fault and its vicinity: A new horizon for the LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating method

Abstract: Zircon U-Pb dating by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry LA-ICP-MS and zircon fission-track FT dating were performed on granitic rocks from the Nojima Fault and its vicinity on northern Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. The analyses yielded zircon FT ages of-Ma, which are in agreement with previously reported zircon FT ages. Zircon U-Pb U-Pb ages of-Ma were also determined. By combining these results with existing radiometric age data, we estimated the entire cooling history of th… Show more

“…We used FCT zircon as a U-Pb reference material because it has been precisely dated by the ID-TIMS U-Pb method22 and our repeated analyses of FCT confirmed its suitability as a U-Pb reference zircon923. To test the validity of the applied method and the reproducibility of the obtained age data, zircons of known age from the Buluk Member Tuff (16.2 ± 0.6 Ma24) were also dated during the analytical session.…”

“…rare earth element characteristics) could be used to interpret the obtained ages Gunther et al 1999;Becker et al 2000). Multiple (or double) dating by the U-Pb and FT methods on the same spot is a significant advantage in obtaining information on the geological history of target samples (Carter & Moss 1999;Ito et al 2010;Iwano et al 2012). In this report, the LA-ICP-MS FT dating method is briefly reviewed to mention age equations and statistical treatments of age data.…”
