U‐Th disequilibrium dating uses the ratio of the intermediate 230Th daughter isotope to the 238U parent isotope to date zircon crystallisation for volcanic and plutonic rocks in Pleistocene–Holocene deposits. It is frequently used to constrain the duration and rate of magma recharge in volcanic systems. While ≲ 350 ka zircon is not in secular equilibrium in the 230Th system, the current U‐Th disequilibrium methodology uses reference materials that are > 350 ka. No reference material ≲ 350 ka has been available to validate the accuracy of the approach and ensure methods are repeatable across laboratories. This study presents zircon SS14‐28 from Jeju Island (South Korea) as a suitable reference material for U‐Th disequilibrium dating. Zircon SS14‐28 was analysed using two analytical approaches (SIMS and LA‐ICP‐MS) and four instruments: CAMECA IMS 1280, ASI SHRIMP II, sector field high‐resolution LA‐ICP‐MS and multi‐collector LA‐ICP‐MS, in four laboratories. These methods each individually result in isochrons gradients within uncertainty (2s) of each other (CAMECA: 0.532 ± 0.051 (MSWD = 0.64); SF‐HR‐LA‐ICP‐MS: 0.536 ± 0.054 (MSWD = 1.3); MC‐LA‐ICP‐MS: 0.533 ± 0.041 (MSWD = 0.67); SHRIMP II: 0.68 ± 0.22 (MSWD = 0.3)). The age proposed in this study is 82 ± 6 ka calculated from a combined isochron gradient of 0.529 ± 0.025 (MSWD = 0.87, n = 132).

The Hyeongjeseom (Islet) is an erosional remnant of volcano which is located about 2 km northeast of sea shore of the Songaksan tuff ring, and is composed of volcaniclastic deposit, agglomerate and scoria deposit, ponded lava, aa lava flows, reworked deposit and beach deposit in ascending order from the base. The volcano is formed by volcaniclastic deposits and lava flows that recorded a transition from initial phreatomagmatic to magmatic explosions followed by lava effusion. It is interpreted that the outcropped volcaniclastic deposit may be a remaining portion of outer ring of a tuff cone. A bomb and a ponded lava yield geochemically basaltic trachyandesite compositions (SiO 2 51.3 wt%, Na 2 O+K 2 O 6.0 wt%) and belong to olivine basalt with scarce (<5 %) phenocrysts of olivine, petrographically. By incremental heating Ar-Ar dating method, the plateau age of lava flow in the Heongjesom is 9.2±3.6(2σ) ka, implying that the volcanism of Heongjeseom may have occurred earlier than the Songaksan tuff ring which erupted ca. 3.7 ka. It still remains a task to find a volcano which matches with a historical record of volcanic activity that occurred a thousand years ago.

Hydrovolcanic activity on a continental shelf inferred from the subsurface diatreme- and crater-filling deposits of Jeju Island, Korea

Jeju Island comprises numerous tuff rings and tuff cones and their reworked deposits in the subsurface, which formed on the ca. 120-m-deep Yellow Sea continental shelf under the fluctuating Quaternary sea levels. Tens of meter-thick and massive deposits were found by chance during groundwater drilling at three sites. These deposits are interpreted as either syn-eruptive diatreme-filling deposits or post-eruptive crater-filling deposits, both of hydromagmatic volcanoes. The diatremes were cut into shelf sediment, 70 to 250 m thick, and developed generally within it below the Quaternary sea levels. Abundant external water was therefore available for explosive magma-water interactions at shallow levels. The diatreme deposit in one core shows some features attributable to extreme wetness or water saturation of the diatreme fill, such as the matrix support of larger clasts, meager vertical changes in matrix content, and an absence of features related to particle adhesion. Fluidally shaped clasts with delicate reentrant margins in the core suggest minimal particle abrasion and breakage in a water-saturated and highly fluid slurry of tephra and water that was probably filling a shallow bowl-like diatreme, which is distinguished from both phreatomagmatic and kimberlite diatremes. The diatreme deposits in other cores comprise blocky and angular clasts in a sideromelane ash matrix, suggesting phreatomagmatic explosions at a deeper level. One of the cores contains collapsed deposits of thinly stratified tuff emplaced by pyroclastic surges, indicating that the diatreme is associated with an emergent tuff ring. Both Surtseyan and phreatomagmatic eruptions are therefore interpreted to have occurred on the shelf under the controls of fluctuating Quaternary sea levels. The subsurface diatremes suggest that there can be a variety of diatremes with different sizes, shapes, and material characteristics beneath the craters of hydromagmatic volcanoes, including not only maars but also tuff rings and tuff cones.
