Zinc Requirement of the Young Guinea Pig

Abstract: The zinc requirement and signs of zinc deficiency of the young guinea pig were investigated. One-week-old Hartley guinea pigs were fed low-zinc, semipurified diets with either 30% EDTA-treated casein or 30% EDTA-treated soybean protein as the protein source. Zinc was supplemented as ZnCO3 at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 60 ppm (casein diets) and 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 60 ppm (soybean protein diets). Specificity of zinc deficiency was determined by rapid growth response to zinc supplementation following a 4-week period o… Show more

“…The potential influence of this "secondary" zinc deficiency in the protein-deprived animals on immune function and disease resistance should not be ignored. Plasma zinc concentrations in control guinea pigs were somewhat lower than normal values reported previously (1,25) and tended to decline between 3 and 5 weeks postinfection. Depressed plasma zinc levels, VOL.…”

“…From this they concluded that the loss in AP activity was directly attributed to Zn deficiency. A decrease in AP activity in the plasma and tissue of Zn-deficient guinea-pigs has been reported by Alberts et al (1977) and Hsieh & Navia (1980). Similar observations have been reported in rats (Prasad & Oberleas, 1971 ;Adeniyi & Heaton, 1980).…”

“…3 . 1 ; AP) activity has been studied (Alberts et al 1977;Hsieh & Navia, 1980). The present work was, therefore, undertaken to study biochemical changes in experimentally produced Zn-deficient guinea-pigs.…”

“…The slurry was allowed to settle, the supernatant was withdrawn, and the same (EDTA) treatment was repeated four times. Then the slurry was rinsed four times with 10 liters of deionized water (for each rinse) and finally mixed with 2 liters of 95% ethanol before being air dried, as previously described (26). The dried, metal-free casein was processed by Harlan Laboratories with components and metals of the highest purity grade available (Alfa Aesar, Ward Hill, MA) to produce the Ni-depleted mouse feed.…”
