Zinc ion stabilized MnO2 nanospheres for high capacity and long lifespan aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Abstract: Zinc ion stabilized MnO2 nanospheres with a flower-like morphology and mesoporous texture are prepared, and they show high specific capacity and superior cycling stability for Zn-ion batteries.

“…After 300 continuous charge and discharge at the current density of 0.2 A g −1 , 50% of the capacity was maintained. The capacity loss could be due to the irreversible phase transition and/or the dissolution of Mn during the charge/discharge process . Moreover, two assembled Zn‐ion batteries in series can power a playmobile and a small model fan, further demonstrating the practical potential of the 3D carbon paper and the deposited composite electrode (Figure e).…”

“…Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries have aroused great interest in chemistry and material community, due to their favorable merits of good safety and cost efficiency, as well as faster ion diffusion kinetics compared with their organic counterparts . Therefore, a Zn–MnO 2 battery was also assembled using Zn foil as the anode, MnO 2 /EC as the cathode using 1 m ZnSO 4 and 0.1 m MnSO 4 as electrolyte.…”

“…Additionally, the cathode may not undergo complete activation at higher current density, resulting in reduced initial capacities . Improved cathode wettability and gradual cathode material activation may also explain why there is a steady increase in capacity during GCD testing until the capacity stabilizes at close to 200 cycles . Overall, the good performance of the assembled ZIB can be attributed to several factors.…”

“…The first plateau shows a smaller potential jump during the rest period versus the second plateau. This indicates that the process occurring during the second plateau has a smaller diffusion coefficient compared with the first plateau and is more kinetically limited …”
