The aim of this study was to measure the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) in deciduous teeth from children living in Jordan and to investigate the affecting factors. Deciduous teeth samples (n = 320, without fillings) were collected from 5- to 12-year-old children and analyzed for Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, and Zn using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. A questionnaire was used to gather information on each child, such as sex, age, tooth type (incisors, canines, and molars), tooth position within the mouth (upper or lower jaw), caries status, presence of amalgam fillings inside the mouth, type of drinking water (tap water, home purified water, and plant purified water), and zone of residence (close to or far from heavy traffic roads). The mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, and Zn were 30.26, 0.55, 6.23, 34.72, and 128.21 μg/g, respectively. Our results indicate that there is a clear relation between the concentrations of the metals analyzed in this study and tooth type, tooth position within the mouth, caries status, presence of amalgam fillings inside the mouth, and type of drinking water. No significant differences in the concentrations of the five metals analyzed were observed due to sex. Our results also show that no significant difference among Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, and Zn concentrations and age among the ages of 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12, except for Pb, which decreases at age 11-12.

ENGLISH SUMMARYHuman primary teeth can give important information about trace element exposure prenatally and in early childhood -the period of tooth formation and the most vulnerable period in life. Trace elements from the environment and from nutrition are built into the tooth tissues during the period of tooth formation. As tooth tissues develop incrementally, according to a known pattern, and are very stable, teeth may function as recorders or biomarkers of different exposures during the period of tooth formation. In this paper the use of primary teeth as biomarkers of exposure is presented with a special focus on the use within epidemiology. INNLEDNINGMelketenner kan gi viktig informasjon om eksponering overfor sporelementer på fosterstadiet og i tidlig barndom. Denne perioden av livet regnes for å vaere spesielt sensitiv med hensyn til eksponering for miljøgifter, fordi organene er umodne, og barrierene mot miljøet ikke er ferdigutviklet [1]. Fordi kroppen er i rask vekst, har barn generelt høyere metabolisme enn voksne og utsettes potensielt for større mengder forurensning per kilo kroppsvekt som en følge av høyere oksygenforbruk og større inntak av mat og drikke per kilo kroppsvekt [2]. Småbarn putter også gjerne ting i munnen som inneholder helsefarlige stoffer. En spesiell oppmerksomhet må derfor rettes mot barns miljøforhold.Nye levesett og kostholdsvaner kan også virke inn på helsen. For lavt inntak av essensielle elementer fra ernaeringen vil kunne gi helseutfall på kortere eller lengre sikt [3]. For å overvåke endringer i miljøet og befolkningens helsetilstand, kreves ulike kontrollrutiner. Enkelte vev og vaesker i kroppen kan brukes til å måle kroppens opptak av elementer og forbindelser fra miljøet, såkalte biomarkører for eksponering [4]. Melketenner har vaert brukt som biomarkører i en rekke studier og kan gi viktig informasjon om barnets miljø på fosterstadiet og i tidlig barndom [5][6][7]. Sporstoffer fra miljø og ernaering bygges inn i tannvevet etter hvert som tennene dannes. Fordi tannvevet dannes lagvis etter et kjent mønster og dessuten er svaert stabilt, kan tenner fungere som en slags ferdsskriver for ulike eksponeringer i tanndanningsperioden [8,9]. Tannvev kan også vise morfologiske forandringer og mineraliseringsdefekter som resultat av eksponering overfor miljøgifter, sykdom eller ernaeringssvikt i løpet av tanndannelsen [10,11]. Melketenner har vaert brukt i en rekke epidemiologiske undersøkelser rundt om i verden for å avdekke områder med miljøforurensning [12][13][14][15], undersøke hviken påvirkning eksponeringer for toksiske sporelementer har på barns utvikling og helse [16][17][18] og for å kartlegge ernaeringstilstanden hos grupper av barn [7,19]. I denne artikkelen presenteres hvordan melketenner har vaert brukt og brukes i forskningssammenheng for å øke kunnskapen om barns opptak av toksiske og essensielle elementer fra miljø og ernaering, samt hvordan denne kunnskapen kan brukes til å forebygge helseskader. ObjectivesA multi‐isotope study was conducted on individuals buried at Skriðuklaustur monastery (AD 1493–1554) to investigate their geographic origins and dietary composition. Comparative material from individuals excavated from Skeljastaðir, an inland farm site was also analyzed.Materials and methodsBone collagen was extracted from 50 humans (Skriðuklaustur and Skeljastaðir) and 25 animals (Skriðuklaustur) and analyzed for δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S. Dental enamel samples from 31 individuals (Skriðuklaustur) were also analyzed for 87Sr/86Sr, δ18O, δ13C, and trace elements (Pb, Sr, Zn, Ba).ResultsThe mean value determined from individuals from Skriðuklaustur (n = 36) was δ13C = −18.7 ± 0.8‰, δ15N = 12.8 ± 1.1‰, and δ34S = 9.0 ± 1.6‰, whereas at Skeljastaðir (n = 14), it was δ13C = −20.5 ± 0.8‰, δ15N = 7.8 ± 0.9‰, and δ34S = 9.4 ± 1.6‰. At Skriðuklaustur, human dental enamel samples (n = 31) provided a 87Sr/86Sr range of 0.7060–0.7088, δ18Ophosphate from 13.9 to 16.1‰ and δ13Ccarbonate from −16.6 to −12.9‰. Inferred drinking water (δ18Odw) values range from −12.3 to −8.9‰. Sr concentrations range from 25.8 to 156.7 ppm, Ba from 0.11 to 0.81 ppm, Zn from 43.8 to 145.8 ppm, and Pb from 0.13 to 9.40 ppm.DiscussionA combination of results indicates that the people from Skriðuklaustur were born in Iceland, but some lived inland during childhood while others lived closer to the coast. Since Skriðuklaustur was a hospital, these individuals may have sought medical treatment at the monastery. The δ13C and δ15N values determined from bone collagen indicate that the people residing at Skriðuklaustur consumed a diet high in marine protein, while those residing at Skeljastaðir exhibit values more consistent with terrestrial resources.
