Zinc in patients with chronic renal failure

Abstract: In order to assess zinc status in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) plasma and erythrocyte zinc levels were determined in 13 patients undergoing regular haemodialysis. Additional determinations of plasma copper, plasma and erythrocyte magnesium and potassium were also performed. The mean plasma zinc level was slightly less than normal, but the difference was not statistically significant. The erythrocyte zinc content, however, as well as erythrocyte magnesium and potassium levels were significantly inc… Show more

“…Some investigators have reported a reduction [13,14] and others acute toxicity or increased levels of essential trace elements in hemodialysis patients [15][16][17]. Such discrepant discussion was present also in a review article by Tonelli et al [2].…”

“…This discrepancy can be as a result of the population's heterogenic nature or measurement technique sensitivity differences. Piechota and colleges have reported insignificant differences between ESRD patients and healthy group for Zn and Cu plasma levels but Mg level was higher in patients than control individuals [15]. Mansouri and his cooperators reported normal concentrations of Zn in uremic patients [16].…”

“…Plasma and serum levels of copper in patients with renal failure were reported to be high [12,30] or normal [8,[87][88][89][90]. Serum copper tends to be generally low in patients treated by HD and CAPD [21,35,91].…”
