Zinc finger-like motifs in rat ribosomal proteins S27 and S29

Abstract: The primary structures of the rat 40S ribosomal subunit proteins S27 and S29 were deduced from the sequences of nucleotides in recombinant cDNAs and confirmed by determination of amino acid sequences in the proteins. Ribosomal protein S27 has 83 amino acids and the molecular weight is 9,339. Hybridization of cDNA to digests of nuclear DNA suggests that there are 4-6 copies of the S27 gene; the mRNA for the protein is about 620 nucleotides in length. Ribosomal protein S29 has 55 amino acids and the molecular we… Show more

“…S14 gives weak rRNA footprints located in the 3Ј domain of the 16 S rRNA (27). A zinc-finger motif found in several members of the S14 family has been postulated to contribute to an interaction with rRNA (30,31). However, no zinc finger motif is present in mammalian mitochondrial S14.…”

“…RPS27, also called metallopanstimulin-1 (MPS-1), was first identified as a growth factor inducible gene which encodes a 9.5 kDa protein of 84 amino acids with a zinc-finger-like motif (Chan et al, 1993;FernandezPol et al, 1993;Wong et al, 1993). RPS27/MPS-1 is a nuclear protein and overexpressed in large quantities in various proliferating tissues (Fernandez-Pol et al, 1994) and in multiple human cancers, including carcinomas of colon (Ganger et al, 1997;Wong et al, 1993), prostate , breast (Atsuta et al, 2002), liver (Ganger et al, 2001), and head and neck .…”

“…They have high codon biases, 0.745 and 0.510, respectively, as expected for yeast ribosomal protein genes. The predicted proteins have a zinc finger-like motif of the C2-C2 type as do many other ribosomal proteins from eukaryotes, archaebacteria, eubacteria, and mitochondria (9).…”
