Objective: To examine zinc and vitamin A intake and status and associated dietary, socio-demographic, lifestyle and physiological factors in British young people. Design: National Diet and Nutrition Survey of young people aged 4-18 y. Setting: Great Britain, 1997. Subjects: Complete 7-day weighed dietary records were provided by 1520 participants, while 1193 provided blood samples. Results: A total of 13 and 11% of participants respectively reported low dietary intakes of zinc and vitamin A (retinol equivalents), relative to the UK lower reference nutrient intake. These percentages were not altered significantly by including contributions to intake from supplements, mainly containing vitamin A (as retinol). Likelihood of low zinc and/or vitamin A intake was more often associated with age, sex and likely under-reporting of food consumption than with other sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Low zinc and vitamin A intakes were generally less likely in those with higher consumption of dairy foods (mainly milk). Zinc and vitamin A status (assessed by plasma zinc and retinol concentrations) were adequate in almost all participants. Plasma zinc concentration was not significantly associated with zinc intake. Plasma retinol concentration was correlated with vitamin A intake (overall r ¼ 0.17, Po0.001; adjusted for age and plasma a 1 -antichymotrypsin concentration) and increased significantly with age (Po0.001) in both sexes. A significant association was found between plasma zinc and retinol concentrations in boys only (r ¼ 0.17, P ¼ 0.001). Objective: To assess vitamin A and E status and anaemia in non-pregnant Malawian adolescent girls. Design: A cross-sectional study in rural village communities in the Shire Valley, Southern Malawi. Subjects: Adolescent girls, n 118, aged between 10 and 19 y, 112 of whom were unmarried. Methods: Socio-demographic information was collected by questionnaire, heights and weights were measured. Vitamin A was assessed by the Modi®ed Relative Dose Response (MRDR) test, in addition to serum retinol values. Blood samples were collected 4±5 h after administration of 3,4-didehydroretinyl acetate. Retinol and atocopherol levels were measured by HPLC. Serum retinol results for non-pregnant girls were compared with values for 43 adolescent pregnant girls which were available from a previous study. Results: 26.6% of non-pregnant girls had serum retinol values`0.70 mmol/L; 40.2% had an MRDR ratio b 0.060. In 59.3%, serum tocopherol levels were`11.5 mmol/L and the tocopherol/cholesterol ratio was`2.2 in 23.9%. 11.3% had a haemoglobin ! 12 g/dl. Vitamin A levels were signi®cantly related to age, and younger girls were more likely to be de®cient. Signi®cant correlations were found between serum retinol, MRDR values and serum tocopherol. Girls with a low body mass index for age had tocopherol cholesterol ratios`2.2. Low serum retinol values occurred signi®cantly more often in stunted girls (P 0.01). Serum retinol values of adolescent pregnant girls were signi®cantly lower than those of non-pregnant adolescents (P 0.002). Conclusions: Vitamin A and E de®ciency and anaemia were common in adolescent non-pregnant girls, and thought to partly result from increased growth requirements. Girls who become pregnant at an early age are at risk of depletion of their nutritional reserves. Measures to reduce nutritional de®ciencies before the ®rst pregnancy are needed.

ResumoObjetivo: verificar o estado nutricional relativo ao ferro, cobre e zinco e a correlação entre índice de massa corporal, níveis séricos e dietéticos desses elementos, em adolescentes durante o estirão pubertário.Métodos: estudo descritivo, do tipo corte transversal, envolvendo uma amostra de 47 adolescentes atendidos em ambulatório de adolescência clínica, durante o período de março a dezembro de 1999, que se apresentavam no estirão pubertário, do total de 360 que freqüentaram o ambulatório no período, sendo 19 rapazes na faixa etária de 12,3 a 16 anos, e 28 moças na faixa etária de 11,1 a 13,6 anos. Variáveis analisadas: dietética (recordatório de 24 horas, freqüência e registro alimentar) para determinar a ingestão de ferro, cobre e zinco; antropométrica (peso e altura) para aferição do índice de massa corporal; bioquímica (dosagem sérica de ferro pelo kit in vitro Diagnóstica, ferritina pelo kit Immulite, cobre e zinco por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica). Utilizou-se o coeficiente de Spearman para análise estatistíca.Resultados: dos 47 adolescentes em estirão pubertário, apresentaram ingestão adequada de: ferro (95% e 36%), cobre (53% e 57%) e zinco (21% e 21%) nos sexos masculino e feminino, respectivamente. A maioria dos adolescentes era eutrófica segundo os percentis do IMC. Bioquimicamente, os rapazes apresentaram valores normais para ferro e zinco em toda a amostra; para cobre em 95% e para ferritina em 84%. As moças também apresentaram valores normais de ferro e zinco; para cobre em 96,4% e para ferritina em 96%. Não houve correlação estatisticamente significante entre IMC e concentração sérica de ferro, ferritina, cobre e zinco, e entre concentração sérica e ingestão dietética dos minerais estudados, nem tampouco para a relação ferro sérico e ferritina. Conclusões AbstractObjective: to examine iron, copper and zinc nutritional status and their correlation with Body Mass Index (BMI), serum and dietetic levels in adolescents during the pubertal growth spurt.Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study involving a sample of 47 adolescents out of 360 patients (19 boys, whose ages ranged from 12.3 to 16 years and 28 girls, whose ages ranged from 11.1 to 13.6 years), who were seen at a clinic for adolescents from March to December 1999. The variables analyzed were: Diet (24 hours Dietary Recall, Food Frequency Intake Questionnaire and Food Register Methods) to determine iron, copper and zinc intake; anthropometry (weight and height) to check BMI; biochemistry (measure of serum iron level through a Diagnóstica kit in vitro; ferritin through Immulite kit, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for biochemical evaluation of serum iron, ferritin, copper and zinc.
