Zika Virus Vector Competency of Mosquitoes, Gulf Coast, United States

Abstract: Zika virus has recently spread throughout the Americas. Although Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are considered the primary vector, Culex quinquefasciatus and mosquitoes of other species may also be vectors. We tested Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. taeniorhynchus mosquitoes from the US Gulf Coast; both were refractory to infection and incapable of transmission.

“…The spiky spread of ZIKV throughout Americas [7], especially in Brazil, poses phobia for travelling to these countries and some travel restriction was put especially for pregnant females [4,26]. In our study, more than one-third of the participants believed that it will dangerous to travel to the countries where ZIKV is circulating.…”

“…In January 2017, The WHO reported that 75 countries around the world notified the continuing of ZIKV mosquito-borne transmission, and 46 of these countries are in the Latin American and Caribbean territories. The virus has recently spread throughout the whole Americas [6,7]. ZIKV continues to spread geographically to areas where the competent vectors and other suitable environmental factors are existing [7].…”

“…The results showed arguments that support (Franca et al, 2016;Guedes et al, 2016;Guo et al, 2016) or reject (Aliota et al, 2016b;Amraoui et al, 2016;Boccolini et al, 2016;Fernandes et al, 2016;HallMendelin et al, 2016;Huang Y.J. et al, 2016;Weger-Lucarelli et al, 2016;Hart et al, 2017) Culex vector competence. To understand so many disparate results, the protocols should be analyzed and compared taking into account several issues that include the virus-vector origin (geographical coherence), and virus and vector past history in the laboratory (number of passages/generations) that made them genetically quite different to the complex wild circulating ones (Berthet et al, 2014;Bennett et al, 2016;Chouin-Carneiro et al, 2016;.…”

“…The magnitude of these neurological problems associated with ZVD outbreak of 2015 was so worrisome that the World Health Organization (WHO) in February 1, 2016 declared the outbreak a "PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY OF INTERNATIONAL CONCERN", and activated an Emergency Incident Management System to handle international response to the outbreak [14]. The spread of this infection to countries where it was previously unknown was so alarming that in January 2017, mosquito-borne transmission of the infection had been reported in 75 countries across the globe, with 46 of these countries being in the Latin American and Caribbean zones [15] [16].…”
