Zika virus: An emerging flavivirus

Abstract: Zika virus (ZIKV) is a previously little-known flavivirus closely related to Japanese encephalitis, West Nile, dengue, and yellow fever viruses, all of which are primarily transmitted by blood-sucking mosquitoes. Since its discovery in Uganda in 1947, ZIKV has continued to expand its geographic range, from equatorial Africa and Asia to the Pacific Islands, then further afield to South and Central America and the Caribbean. Currently, ZIKV is actively circulating not only in much of Latin America and its neighb… Show more

“…ZIKV is a Flavivirus transmitted by the bite of Aedes species of mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti [8,9]. The transmission of ZIKV can also occur through sexual intercourse, as sexual transmission have been reported in Argentina, France, Chile, Italy, and New Zealand [10,11].…”

“…ZIKV is a flavivirus most closely related to dengue virus (DENV) (5,6) but also related with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), West Nile virus (WNV), and yellow fever virus (YF), all of which are transmitted primarily by mosquitoes (7). Understanding host protective immunity to this virus is critical for the design of optimal vaccines, but little is currently known about the immune responses to ZIKV in humans since infections with ZIKV have not been frequent in the past (8,9).…”

“…Aedes albopictus was also sampled but tested negative for flaviviruses. The species is a potential vector of flaviviruses and many other arboviruses in some parts of the world [3,15]. Kucharz & Cebula-Byrska [61] note that Ae.…”

“…Dengue is a reemerging disease in the country, with over 2 million confirmed cases and 702 recent deaths [12]. ZIKV has gained global attention as its geographic distribution has expanded dramatically from equatorial Africa and Asia to the Pacific Islands, South America and the Caribbean, causing many cases of neurological disorders and neonatal malformations [1315].…”
