ZigBee-Based Communication System for Data Transfer Within Future Microgrids

Abstract: A wireless data communication system for future microgrids (MGs) is presented in this paper. It is assumed that each MG has a central controller and each distributed generation unit in the MG has a local controller. The communication system is responsible for transmitting and receiving data amongst these controllers. This communication system is based on ZigBee technology, which is a low cost and low power consumption device. However, its main limitation is the low data transfer rate. To reduce the number of d… Show more

“…When the outage happens at the PCC, the outage detections would respond quickly and break the PCC for local power safety, forming an islanded MG. Thus, connected EVs in the micro-grid are scheduled to support the local area, which requires not only quick scheduling but also low-latency, low energy, and reliable communication technologies such as PLC [110] for AG-EVs and ZigBee for home [217], [222]. When the outage happens in a small area, EVs are mainly considered as private generator at home to provide individual energy demand.…”

“…1. To this end, a low-bandwidth pointto-multipoint wireless communication technique with a suitable latency is needed [58]. Now, let us define the HMG and PMG depending upon their mode of operations (i.e., corresponding to operational voltage and frequency limits) as shown in Figs.…”

“…With this in mind, there is no standard mentioning directly On the other hand, in IoT-enabled energy systems, communication infrastructure is a key part that has to be well-established at each level of the system starting from a wide-area network down to a building unit [8,9]. In addition, to design a communication system for a given energy system, there are some factors like system size, installation and maintenance costs, flexibility of the system for future expansions, etc., which need to be considered [8]. More importantly, security of the system should be considered in every step of designing a communication system [10].…”
