Remote control and home automation terms are becoming very important nowadays. Sensors are everywhere: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems, fridges, security cameras, hard disks inside servers, voltages, temperatures and fan speeds in modern computers are widespread. Access to these sensors, both physical and virtual (e.g. data retrieved from an operating system), is possible thanks to third party tools and applications. This work outlines a framework called OBRECAD (Object Based REmote Control And Domotics). OBRECAD allows the communication between sensors, generic devices and actuators. It is powerful enough to support current and future sensor implementations and usages thanks to the realized hardware abstraction, yet easy enough to use. It can be easily implemented even on a micro-controller. The command oriented messaging framework allow an ubiquitous access in a very easy way using even text only email, or any SMS capable device. Complex architectures can also be managed in an hierarchical way thanks to the gateway component. Finally, a Java prototype was developed, but any programming language can be used. The prototype is configured using XML files that describe the connections between devices.

This paper addresses the design and implementtation of a residential gateway: MyServer, which is to provide services regarding home security, inventory tracking, facility management, and family care in a smart home system. Inherently an interactive and multitasking system driven by peripherals connected through wireless sensor networks, the overall MyServer architecture is designed with six clearly defined core service modules operating on a message oriented middleware (MOM) framework. Each of these modules is implemented with a programming template utilizing event publish/subscribe messaging mechanism. This paper also demonstrates a successful implementation of the proposed MyServer system in an emulated home environment, where peripherals are connected through ZigBee wireless sensor network.

A new low-cost demodulator for ZigBee receivers satisfying requirements of IEEE802.15.4 standard is presented, which is designed for ISM 2.4 GHz band and based on Zero-IF receivers. This demodulator extracts symbols directly from baseband signal rather than recovering PN code chips, so its structure is simple. Two main techniques are used to improve the performance of demodulator. One is Phase-Axis Crossing Detector (PACD) which detects the phase correlation of baseband signal. The other is symbol synchronization and sampling clock correction algorithm. The result shows that this demodulator performance, Symbol Error Rate (SER) and Packet Error Rate (PER) meet IEEE 802.15.4TM standard requirements and the demodulator can handle frequency offset in excess of 200 kHz, involving a Zero-IF receiver with a Noise Figure (NF) lower than 17 dB, which is easily implemented in standard CMOS technology.
