Zero-Crossing Precoding with Maximum Distance to the Decision Threshold for Channels with 1-Bit Quantization and Oversampling

Abstract: Low-resolution devices are promising for systems that demand low energy consumption and low complexity as required in IoT systems. In this study, we propose a novel waveform for bandlimited channels with 1-bit quantization and oversampling at the receivers. The proposed method implies that the information is conveyed within the time instances of zero-crossings which is then utilized in combination with a Gray-coding scheme. Unlike the existing method, the proposed method does not require optimization and trans… Show more

“…The authors propose a quantization precoder which optimizes the transmit signal under a bandwidth constraint, such that the payload bits can be uniquely detected from the 1-bit quantized observations at the receiver in the absence of noise. Spatio-temporal precoding for a similar setup as in [23] has been considered in [24], [25], where the authors also proposed a superior bit-mapping, denoted as zero-crossing precoding. The benefits of employing temporal oversampling in a massive MIMO uplink scenario with 1-bit ADCs have been illustrated in [26].…”

“…The quantization precoding technique relies on an exhaustive codebook search which allows simple Hamming distance detection. Superior precoding schemes for MIMO downlink scenarios have been investigated in [14], [15], where a novel time-instance zerocrossing (TI ZX) modulation is introduced. This novel modulation follows the idea of [2] by allocating the information into the time-instance of zero-crossings in order to reduce the number of zero-crossings of the signal.…”

“…This novel modulation follows the idea of [2] by allocating the information into the time-instance of zero-crossings in order to reduce the number of zero-crossings of the signal. The study in [14] relies on a precoding technique based on the MMDDT criterion with spatial zero-forcing (ZF) precoding and TI ZX modulation, whereas [15] proposes an optimal temporalspatial precoding technique with TI ZX modulation along with an minimum mean square error (MMSE) solution. Other studies that consider novel TI ZX modulation schemes have been presented in [13], [16], [17] where the computa-tional complexity is reduced [16].…”

“…Recently, the authors in [24,25] have used spatial oversampling by employing a 1-bit Sigma-Delta (Σ∆) sampling scheme which have shown large performance gains on channel estimation and signal detection. Furthermore, the studies in [26,27,28,29] have devised different precoding techniques which rely on 1-bit quantization at the transmitter.…”
