Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 was coated with silica and investigated as a flame retardant to improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of epoxy resin

Abstract: A material (ZIF-8@SiO 2 ) with a nuclear shell structure was synthesized to improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of epoxy resin (EP) through a synergetic catalytic effect. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was synthesized and its surface was coated with SiO 2 by hydrolyzing tetraethyl orthosilicate. Core-shell structured ZIF-8@SiO 2 was obtained. Then ZIF-8@SiO 2 was added to EP to explore its effect of flame retardancy and smoke suppression on the EP composite. The results of a cone calor… Show more

“…The peak at 814 cm −1 is ascribed to the asymmetric bending and stretching vibration of Si-OH. The peaks at 480 and 652 cm −1 are attributed to the Si-O vibration and O-Si-O bending, respectively [56,57]. Figure 1B (curve b) shows the FT-IR spectrum of the synthesized Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles.…”

“…ZIF-8 contains abundant nitrogen elements and plenty of zinc elements. The catalysis effect of metal oxide derived from ZIF-8 during combustion can catalyze the polymer cross-linked into carbon, so that the stability of the char layer has a better barrier effect and achieves better flame retardancy. …”

“…Therefore, enhancing the flame-retardant properties of PET is becoming a critical problem and has attracted great attention in recent decades [ 6 , 7 ]. Many reliable flame retardants, strategies and methods for suppressing fires have been developed by delaying the ignition or decreasing the release of heat and smoke [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Different types of fillers such as clay [ 14 ], silica [ 15 , 16 , 17 ] and metal oxide nanoparticles [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ] have been incorporated into the PET matrix, which can achieve better flame-retardant, but the effect depends mainly on the type and the contents of the particles used most of which would destroy the mechanical properties.…”
