Zeolites in South Atlantic Deepsea Sediments

Abstract: The stratigraphic and areal distribution of zeolites and their sedimentary associations in deep-sea sediments of the South Atlantic have been determined by examination of all available preQuaternary core and dredge material as well as sediment recovered from deep drilling. Clinoptilolite occurs in association with three dominant sediment components; volcanic, biosiliceous, and turbidite/clays, each of which may provide a source of silica for authigenic formation. Through time, the relative importance of these … Show more

“…Clinoptilolite is a K-rich zeolite of the heulandite family, and is commonly reported, in addition to phillipsite (Kastner and Stonecipher, 1978), in deep-sea sediments (McCoy et al, 1977;Kastner and Stonecipher, 1978;Riech and von Rad, 1979;Thein and von Rad 1987;. Such zeolites are generally of diagenetic origin, although a common diagenetic evolution for zeolites is not generally accepted.…”

“…Zeolites are particularly abundant in the Brazil Basin, occurring throughout the Site 515 sedimentary section and at Site 355 (McCoy et al, 1977). The paragenesis of zeolites in marine sediments is still somewhat of an open question, and various relations to diagenetic sources, companion lithologies, sedimentation rates, and formation ages are advocated.…”

“…They were reported from surface sediments as well as from sediments of different ages in the Atlantic Ocean (e.g. Mt~LII~RE, 1979;McCoY et al, 1977;RIECH & VON RAD, 1979;THEIN & VON RAD, 1987;THUt~OW, 1988), in the Pacific Ocean (e.g. BONATTI, 1963;STONECIPHER, 1976;KASTNER & STONECIPHER, 1978), and in the Indian Ocean (e.g.…”
