Turkey's tick fauna is composed of about 32 species in two families and ten genera in mammals, reptiles, and birds. The ticks of veterinary significance in the family Ixodidae comprise seven genera with 28 different species. Ixodes spp. are mostly seen in northern Turkey. It is likely that the high rainfall and the intensive forest in this area may contribute to this observation. To date, the following species have been found to be sporadically present: Amblyomma variegatum in Hatay province (border to Syria), Boophilus kohlsi in southeastern Turkey (border of Syria), Ornithodorus in Central and East Anatolia, and Otobius megnini in East Anatolia (Malatya Province). Ticks of the genera Haemaphysalis, Hyalomma, Boophilus, Dermacentor, Rhipicephalus, and Argas are widespread throughout Anatolia. Thus, their role in the epidemiology of important human and livestock diseases such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, Lyme disease, and diseases caused by hemoparasites needs to be examined in greater detail.

Ticks feed on a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and even amphibians. The majority of ticks choose specific animal species that are of no medical or veterinary importance for feeding, while others grasp a wide range of hosts, such as petbreeding animals or humans. They can also transmit many human and animal pathogens include viruses, bacteria, rickettsia and protozoa in Turkey. This study was carried out to detect the distribution of ticks in public parks in six districts (Osmangazi, Yıldırım, Nilüfer, Gürsu, Kestel, Mudanya) of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality area (city centre) in Turkey, between May 2016 and May 2018. A total of 6186 ticks were collected with flagging or CO2 trapping method from the public parks. The collected ticks were kept in 70% alcohol and then were identified under a stereomicroscope. Seven hard or soft tick species according to five genera were identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus, R. turanicus, Hyalomma marginatum, H. aegyptium, Dermacentor marginatus, Ixodes ricinus and Argas persicus. Among them, R. sanguineus was the most abundant (59.79%) tick in the public parks. Ixodes ricinus increased significantly primarily in the forest areas. This is the first record of tick species in public parks in Turkey and these results may give us an acute insight into the prevalence of tick-borne infections in pets and humans.

A total of 22 inhabited and 44 abandoned breeding-sites of feral town pigeons in Berlin (West) were examined for the presence of the soft tick Argus reflexus (Fabricius, 1794), a temporary ectoparasite of pigeons. About 50 % of the inspected actual pigeon breeding-sites were infested with ticks, among these each location with 50 or more pigeons. The abandoned pigeon nesting-sites were infested by A .reflexus to at least 14 %.In the course of this investigation 22 people were determined, which had been attacked by A. reflexus in Berlin (West) in recent years. Three of these ersons reported severe symptoms like urticaria, bronchial obstruction and loss of consciousness Pollowing nocturnal bites of A. reflexus, probably expressing an immediate allergic reaction (IgE-mediated type I-allergy). The ticks either actively invaded human habitations from the outside, e.g. after the pigeons had been repelled from established nearby breeding-sites, or they were already present in habitations, when people moved in, particularly when pigeon breeding-sites were reconstructed into human habitations.An inquiry among pest control firms revealed that about 75 control operations against A . reflexus were performed in Berlin (West) in 1987. As the transformation of attics into human dwellings is currently supported in the Federal Republic of Germany and expected to be as well in the GDR, a growing number of A. reflexus-bites in humans can be expected to occur during the next years.It seems likely that A. reflexus is an immigrant from warmer areas, introduced with domesticated rock pigeons Columbu livia forma domestica. In Central Europe the tick does not occur in free nature, but is restricted to those parts of man-made buildings which provide high summer temperatures. Its northern distribution may be limited by the microclimatic temperatures from June to October near pigeon breeding-sites, probably insufficient for embryonic (and perhaps also for postembryonic) development in northern regions.U.S.
