At a time of sustainable development, food wastage constitutes an important problem for the global food economy. A group that is to a large degree co-responsible for wasting food are its buyers, who submit to numerous market trends, including consumptionism. The approach of the consumer to the issue of food wastage may stem from a number of factors, including the idea of belonging to a specific generation. The consumers’ age and the related experiences from the food market may differentiate the rationality of their purchasing behaviour and the scale of food wastage. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of belonging to a particular generation X (aged 60+), Y (aged 31-59) or Z (aged 18-30) on the participants’ attitudes and behaviours concerning unconsumed food. The study was conducted in 2021 using a survey method among 165 people from the Pomorskie Voivodeship. The study results demonstrated that belonging to a particular generation did differentiate the attitudes and behaviours of the surveyed in most of the areas subject to the study. In terms of self-assessment of their own knowledge concerning food wastage, respondents from generation X declared having the most knowledge, while generation Z declared only fragmentary knowledge. The importance of the food wastage issue from an ethical, social and economic standpoint was noticed by higher percentages of participants from generations Y (85.5%) and Z (76.4%) than generation X (70.9%). The food groups where, according to the surveyed, food wastage occurred the most in all generations were: bread, meat, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. The primary causes of wasting food declared by generation Z respondents were spoilage and poor meal planning, while for generations Y and X it was expiry. Attempts to use (process) unconsumed food were made primarily by representatives of the oldest generation (X).

W artykule dokonano przeglądu i porównania wybranych definicji związanych z problematyką strat i marnotrawstwa żywności, sformułowanych przez reprezentatywne instytucje i organizacje na poziomie globalnym i europejskim. Normatywną zasadą nakazującą przeciwdziałanie stratom i marnotrawstwu żywności jest zasada trwałego i zrównoważonego rozwoju, której cel 12.3 wyznaczony przez ONZ nakazuje zmniejszenie ich o połowę do roku 2030. W artykule skupiono się na definicjach takich terminów, jak: żywność, straty oraz marnotrawstwo żywności, ale również: ubytki naturalne, produkty uboczne i odpady żywnościowe, wypracowanych w ramach projektów FLW Standard i FUSIONS. Z przeanalizowanych i przytoczonych stanowisk wynika, że terminy te mogą być różnie rozumiane i definiowane, w zależności od potrzeb, celów i obszaru stosowania danej definicji. Widoczne są rozbieżności w ustalaniu punktu początkowego pomiaru strat i marnotrawstwa. W ujęciu globalnym powinny być one uwzględniane również na etapie przed zbiorami żywności, natomiast w ujęciu europejskim mogą być liczone dopiero na etapie po zbiorach, od kiedy rozpoczyna się łańcuch rolno-żywnościowy. Odmienne ujęcie dotyczy również produktów ubocznych, które według FAO należy traktować jako stratę i marnotrawstwo żywności, zaś według definicji przyjętej w dyrektywie UE nie są one ani stratą, ani odpadem żywnościowym. Od definicji kluczowych terminów i kategorii związanych z problematyką strat i marnotrawstwa żywności zależy przedmiot i zakres ich pomiaru. Kwestie te powinny być uwzględniane w metodach badawczych pomiaru i monitorowania strat i marnotrawstwa, w tym odpadów żywności. Wytyczne w tym zakresie na poziomie UE zostały przyjęte w decyzji delegowanej KE w odniesieniu do wspólnej metody i minimalnych wymagań jakościowych jednolitego pomiaru poziomów odpadów żywności w maju 2019 r.

The global demand for food continues to increase. It is estimated that about 680 million people lack food access and suffer from malnutrition. On the other hand, in the current market, access to food is common and ever easier. Nevertheless, we are increasingly faced with the phenomenon of waste, which refers to the deliberate disposal of food that is fit for human consumption. This article focuses on a very important problem related to food waste, in relation to one of the main groups affected, i.e., consumers. Indeed, it is their awareness and behavior in the context of food waste and in relation to the environment, as well as future approaches to social sustainability, that are of the utmost importance. The study was conducted on a group of 384 respondents—the research sample was differentiated by sex and place of residence. The method used in the study was the analysis of correspondence, using data from the proprietary questionnaire, conducted on a group of adults, i.e., consumers, purchasing food. Respondents were asked about the issues related to the fact of wasting food, the frequency of this phenomenon and the main reasons why they do it. It should be emphasized that the respondents notice the problem by admitting that food is wasted in their households for various reasons. Conclusions resulting from the conducted statistical analysis and the analysis of the literature indicate that the main reason for wastage is that the use-by date has passed. Here arises the question as to why this fact comes about; maybe we buy too much food, which means that we are not able to ensure that the deadline for its consumption is not passed.
