Abstract: Introduction The introduction of orthogonal polarization spectral (OPS) imaging in clinical research has elucidated new perspectives on the role of microcirculatory flow abnormalities in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Essential to the process of understanding and reproducing these abnormalities is the method of quantification of flow scores.

“…MFI is the sum of these flow scores divided by the number of quadrants in which the vessel type is visible. The intraobserver agreement κ score of MFI is 0.78 and 0.95 and interobserver agreement between 0.77 and 1 [18,20,22]. For each time point and each patient, the scores for MFI were averaged.…”

“…According to the recommendations, microvascular flow index (MFI), perfused vessel density (PVD), proportion of perfused vessels (PPVs), and indices of heterogeneity were determined for every patient at all time points. All have been validated previously [18,19,20]. Each score was determined for both large and small microvessels with a cut-off diameter of 20 μm [21].…”

“…Revision surgery has shown salvage rates of potential failures of up to 80% of the reoperations [10,11]. The evidence indicates that early detection and exploration of the flap vascular compromise increases survival rates significantly [13][14][15][16].…”

“…These methods can be used at wide ranges of haematocrit. Both techniques allowed clinicians to assess, at the bedside, the sublingual microcir- culation reflecting the splanchnic microcirculation, as was demonstrated by Boerma [6,21].There are some limitations regarding both methods. As the vascular wall cannot be visualized, only vessels containing RBC may be detected [18] while RBC that are not contained in vessels may disturb visualization of microvessels [22].…”
