YSE-PZ: A Transient Survey Management Platform that Empowers the Human-in-the-loop

Abstract: The modern study of astrophysical transients has been transformed by an exponentially growing volume of data. Within the last decade, the transient discovery rate has increased by a factor of ∼20, with associated survey data, archival data, and metadata also increasing with the number of discoveries. To manage the data at this increased rate, we require new tools. Here we present YSE-PZ, a transient survey management platform that ingests multiple live streams of transient discovery alerts, identifies the host… Show more

“…SN 2023ixf was observed with the Pan-STARRS telescope (PS1/2; Kaiser et al 2002;Chambers et al 2017) between 2023 May 21 and June 2 in grizy bands through the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE; Jones et al 2021). Data storage and/or visualization and follow-up coordination was done through the YSE-PZ web broker (Coulter et al 2022(Coulter et al , 2023. The YSE photometric pipeline is based on photpipe (Rest et al 2005), which relies on calibrations from Magnier et al (2020), Waters et al (2020).…”

“…There are a number of other related software stacks available with some overlap with SkyPortalʼs capabilities. For example, YSE-PZ is a platform with data-broker-like querying and filtering abilities, and that offers a turn-key solution to teams looking for a focus on transient survey management (Coulter et al 2023). The TOM Toolkit focuses on customization for different science use cases, deployable both as a standalone package as well as with its functionality integrated into larger ecosystems (Street et al 2018).…”

“…The data were reduced with Photpipe (Rest et al 2005), which has been used for numerous photometric reductions of YSE data (e.g., Kilpatrick et al 2021;Tinyanont et al 2022;Dimitriadis et al 2022;Gagliano et al 2022;Jacobson-Galán et al 2022a, 2022bTerreran et al 2022). The YSE-PZ software was used for a transient discovery alert of SN 2021hpr, as well as for data collation, management, and visualization (Coulter et al 2022(Coulter et al , 2023. We present a spectrum of SN 2021hpr in Appendix B, which indicates it is a normal SN Ia.…”
