“…For the three levels of poverty P1, P2, and P3, unemployment rate (UR) has a positive and a significant effect on the poverty rate. The findings are in line with the results presented by Meo et al ( 2018 ), Oduwole ( 2015 ), Gallie et al ( 2003 ), Meo et al ( 2018 ), Ukpere and Slabbert ( 2009 ), Saunders ( 2002 ), and Martínez et al ( 2001 ), who conclude that unemployment is one of the major underlying factors behind poverty and they found the positive and significant association between them, while our result contradicts the results of Gustafsson and Johansson ( 1999 ) where poverty had no relationship with unemployment. According to International Labor Organization (ILO), nearly 90% of workers living in extreme poverty are in sub-Saharan African countries.…”
