Youth-led resilience promotion during disaster recovery: A proposed framework, innovative program, and lessons learned.

Abstract: Objective: Disasters, such as a school shooting or a global pandemic, harm psychological health and necessitate recovery. To complement adult-led disaster recovery and trauma-specific approaches, we propose a Youth-Led Resilience Promotion (YLRP) framework focusing on: (a) multitiered change, (b) resilience goals, (c) a promotion mindset, (d) youth strengths, (e) prosocial behaviors, and (f) capacity building through partnerships. “…Together with more traditional activities, it could be inserted within programmes aiming at empowering communities' resilience, also in the case in which young people are involved actively to foster it (e.g. McCarty et al, 2022). Taking into account the variety of psychological processes on which it is based (Raccanello et al, 2023c), it could also be adapted for a range of other disasters, as a valid way to conduct prevention and preparedness actions to be included within evidence‐based guidelines promoted by local, national, and international organizations deputed to foster youth's mental health.…”

“…A total of 31 items in the RSUS were rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 ("strongly disagree") to 5 ("strongly agree"). There were six dimensions in the RSUS, which were as follows: self-efficacy (SE; item 1-5), self-acceptance (SA; item 6-8), emotional stability (ES; item 9-15), problemsolving (PS; item [16][17][18], support from friends (SFRI; item [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] and support from family (SFAM; item [27][28][29][30][31]. The scale SE evaluated the degree to which individuals affirmed their self-competence, and the items were listed such as "I am confident in my abilities" and "if I try, I can do things as well or better than anyone else".…”

“…A recent study in a Chinese sample performed an experiment of mindfulness training on 90 students as well, exploring the developmental trajectories of the impact of mindfulness training on resilience, with the finding of increased individual resilience and emotional intelligence [22]. The 6-year (2012-2017) Youth-Led Resilience Promotion program that was originally conducted to equip youth leaders with resilience and prosocial behaviors in the aftermath of a school shooting could also be adopted to traumatic events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, to boost psychological recovery [23]. Although various means of intervention have been conducted, only limited efforts have been carried out to clarify the influence of arts therapy on the resilience of university students in COVID-19 related stress.…”

“…It encompasses the capacity to bounce back from difficult experiences, maintain mental well-being, and sustain optimal performance under challenging circumstances. Resilience is particularly important for health professionals, as it enables them to cope with the demands of their roles, maintain a sense of purpose, and continue providing highquality care to patients (Lade et al, 2020;McCarty et al, 2022).…”
