“…First, health may become increasingly important for partnership formation with rising age because good health may help prevail against rivals when marriage market opportunities deteriorate. Moreover, health is likely to matter more at higher ages when health problems tend to emerge and when health becomes increasingly salient (Karraker, Sicinski, & Moynihan, 2017). Finally, poor health may discourage potential partners particularly in later life, because they might shy away to avoid the consequences of long-term care (Bulcroft & Bulcroft, 1991; McWilliams & Barrett, 2014; Talbott, 1998).…”

“…Facial attractiveness in WLS was measured by 12 coders using an 11-point rating scale based on each individual’s 1957 high school yearbook photo. These well-characterized facial attractiveness data from WLS have expanded our knowledge on the complex relationship between facial attractiveness and various sociological traits including educational aspirations and occupation [19–22]. Recently, dense genotype data have been made available in WLS.…”

“…We scanned the black-and-white senior photographs of the graduates and coded two characteristics, facial attractiveness (Karraker et al 2015, Scholz & Sicinski 2015 and facial mass (Reither et al 2009). In each case, we arranged for a dozen independent codings of each characteristic, using a visually anchored scale, by college students and by participants in an elderhostel at the UW-Madison, a residential educational program for retired individuals.…”
