Young Workers’ Access to and Awareness of Occupational Safety and Health Services: Age-Differences and Possible Drivers in a Large Survey of Employees in Italy

Abstract: Young workers are in particular need of occupational safety and health (OSH) services, but it is unclear whether they have the necessary access to such services. “…It includes several questions to investigate the main aspects linked to health and safety at work in terms of working conditions, risk exposure and perceptions, health status and outcomes, management and prevention, occupational health and safety professionals and legal aspects. Some of measures included in the questionnaire have been used in further published secondary analysis study [41,42]. In this study, we included the main demographic and occupational variables traditionally linked to the BMI, and self-reported height and weight for computing the BMI, that have been not used elsewhere in other published studies.…”

“…Among them, the new generation of construction workers (NGCWs) are gradually drawing more and more attention in recent years [ 10 , 11 ]. Prior literature has revealed the unique roles of demographic factors like age and seniority in this domain, and cohort studies are specific to the group of young workers [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. The previous research shows that compared with the older workers, young workers have a lower awareness of safety [ 13 ], higher occupational injury rates [ 15 ], and lower safety voice intentions [ 16 ].…”

The previous research shows that compared with the older workers, young workers have a lower awareness of safety [ 13 ], higher occupational injury rates [ 15 ], and lower safety voice intentions [ 16 ]. Therefore, it is worthwhile to conduct in-depth investigations about the improvement of safety performance to a single population, especially for the younger generation [ 17 ].…”

“…Additionally, we analyze whether the relationship between employment contract and presenteeism differs between young and older workers. Young workers represent a group more often affected by adverse employment conditions as temporary working contracts [28], insecure employment [29] or limited access to occupational health and safety [30]. Since they are group of special risk, we hypothesize that the link between contract and SP could be differently pronounced among young workers.…”
