Young students posing problem-solving tasks: what does posing a similar task imply to students?

Abstract: This paper focuses on problem solving and problem posing in mathematics education with 6-year-olds. After working on a problem-solving activity, the young students were asked to pose a similar task to a friend. This article explores how the students interpret the notion of similar. To be able to pose a problem-solving task themselves the students had to change perspective, from searching for information to providing information, and from searching for a solution to searching for a question. Also, to create a s… Show more

“…One of the keys to learning mathematics is problem-solving (NCTM, 2000;Palmér & Van Bommel, 2020;Van Zanten & Van den Heuvel-Panhuizen, 2020). Problemsolving is in line with the spirit of mathematics as a means to develop thinking skills.…”

“…Additionally, although the school level had a non-significant moderation effect, students at higher school levels showed a larger relationship (0.349 > 0.274 > 0.273). Young students always rely on some basic problem solving strategies such as finger counting to solve mathematical problems at the beginning of formal schooling ( Ramirez et al, 2016 ; Palmer and van Bommel, 2020 ). By practicing these strategies, they develop strong problem–answer associations.…”
