Abstract:Young massive stellar clusters are increasingly discussed as major contributors to the flux of Galactic cosmic rays. Westerlund 1, being the most massive young stellar cluster in the Milky Way, is a prime target to study in this regard. We present results from deep observations of the region around Westerlund 1 in very-high-energy gamma rays with the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes. We observe a large-scale (∼2 • diameter) emission region with a shell-like structure, extending far beyond the stellar clu… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
