Objective: Cisgender men's condom use resistance (CUR), deliberate attempts to avoid using a condom with a partner who wishes to use one, may include coercive strategies, such as deception and force, and places their partners at risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transitted infections (STIs). This investigation used an alcohol administration design to examine one distal (history of unintended partner pregnancy) and two proximal (acute alcohol intoxication, condom use rationale) contributors to men's intentions to engage in coercive CUR. Method: Nonproblem drinking, cisgender men (N = 313) completed questionnaires, then were randomized to a beverage condition (control, placebo, low dose [.04%gm], and high dose [.08%gm]). Participants completed a sexual risk analog and reported their coercive CUR intentions after a hypothetical, female partner provided a condom use rationale (STI avoidance or pregnancy avoidance). Results: Men who received the pregnancy condom use rationale reported higher intentions to engage in coercive CUR when they received a high alcohol dose relative to sober men. For men who had a history of unintended partner pregnancy, receiving a pregnancy condom use rationale was associated with greater intentions to have forced, condomless sex if they received a high alcohol dose relative to sober men. Conclusions: Intoxicated men may be more likely to engage in coercive CUR; this may indicate that when intoxicated, pregnancy risks are less salient relative to STI-related outcomes. As reproductive rights are being decimated, effective interventions targeting CUR, particularly when intoxicated, are needed in tandem with policies that affirm one's ability to prevent and terminate pregnancy. Public Health Significance StatementThe present study examined three contributors to men's intentions to use coercive strategies to avoid using a condom: (a) a history of having a partner have an unintended pregnancy; (b) alcohol intoxication; and (c) whether a partner wants to use a condom to prevent STIs or pregnancy. Results indicate that a history of unintended partner pregnancy is associated with intentions to have forced, condomless sex, when men are intoxicated and are asked to use a condom to prevent pregnancy. The results suggest that past unintended pregnancy may not deter intoxicated men from engaging in aggressive strategies to avoid condom use, even when there is a possibility of unintended pregnancy.

Most but not all adults become parents, yet it remains unclear which characteristics indicate an orientation toward parenting. The aims of this study were to (a) distinguish profiles of individual and interpersonal resources in young adults that may orient them toward parenthood and (b) investigate whether profiles predicted timing of entering parenthood, postpartum parenting behavior, and parent–infant bonding. Participants were 1,429 young people (53% female) enrolled in an Australian 39-year longitudinal study. Predictor data for latent profile analysis were collected at 23–24 and 27–28 years. Parenthood timing was designated as “early” ≤25 years, “on-time” >25 years, and “not a parent” by age 37 years. Parenting outcomes were assessed at 12 months postpartum in 684 parents of 1,144 children. Four-profile classes were identified: “connected” (n = 463, 32.4%), “constricted empathy” (n = 461, 32.3%), “insecure” (n = 343, 24%), and “disconnected” (n = 162, 11.3%). Connected young adults were characterized by close ties to family of origin and peers and by identity clarity and empathy. Connected participants were more likely than those in insecure and disconnected classes to be parents by 37 years and more likely to enter parenthood “on-time” compared to “early” parenthood in the constricted empathy class. Among those who became parents, the connected class reported the strongest bonds and warmest parenting and was least anxious or hostile in parenting their infants. Findings provide insights into preconception patterns among variables that together predict reproductive timing, postpartum bonding, and quality of parenting.

Tobacco dependency remains a persistent global public health challenge, with significant implications for morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This systematic review presents a comprehensive analysis of tobacco dependency studies conducted in the United Kingdom (UK). The objective is to distill existing research to inform evidence-based interventions and policies targeting this pressing issue. The primary purpose of this systematic review is to provide an up-to-date synthesis of the current state of tobacco dependency in the UK. By examining a wide range of studies, we aim to identify trends, risk factors, and effective interventions, ultimately contributing to the development of targeted strategies for reducing tobacco use in the UK population. A rigorous systematic search across various academic databases yielded a substantial body of evidence encompassing diverse study designs, including epidemiological surveys, qualitative investigations, and intervention trials. Studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria were systematically reviewed and assessed for quality. Key themes explored include the prevalence of tobacco dependency, associated risk factors, intervention effectiveness, and disparities across demographic groups. Our review highlights several critical findings: The prevalence of tobacco dependency in the UK has declined over the past decade, but challenges persist, particularly among vulnerable populations. Multiple risk factors, including socioeconomic status, mental health conditions, and peer influences, contribute to tobacco dependency in the UK. Evidence supports the effectiveness of various interventions, including smoking cessation programs, taxation policies, and public awareness campaigns. Disparities in tobacco dependency exist along demographic lines, necessitating targeted strategies to address these inequalities. Understanding the complex landscape of tobacco dependency in the UK is imperative for informing public health policies and interventions. This systematic review underscores the need for continued efforts to reduce tobacco use, particularly among disadvantaged groups. The identified risk factors and effective interventions provide valuable insights for designing evidence-based strategies to combat tobacco dependency and its associated health and economic burdens. Addressing these challenges is essential for improving the overall well-being and health equity of the UK population.
