Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between the intensive care experience and the state anxiety of patients hospitalized in the coronary intensive care unit. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 192 patients from the coronary intensive care unit of a university hospital. Data were collected using a Patient Information Form, the Intensive Care Experience Scale (ICE), and the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-I). The analysis was conducted using SPSS software version 25.0. Descriptive statistics were reported as counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: Among the participants, 38% were aged 65 and older, 76.6% were male, 93.2% were married, 63% were admitted to the intensive care unit from the emergency room, and 88.5% had prior experience in an intensive care unit. The total and sub-dimension scores of the ICE and STAI-I were moderate. We found a weak positive correlation between the STAI-I total score and the ICE total score (r= 0.320). There was a very strong positive correlation between pessimistic experiences in the intensive care unit and the STAI-I total score (r=0.907). Additionally, there was a moderate negative correlation between satisfaction with care received in the intensive care unit and the sub-dimensions of memory of experiences (Awareness of Surroundings, Satisfaction with the Care, Recollection of Experiences) (r=0.252, r=-0.489, r=-0.496). Conclusion: The study found that pessimistic experiences in the intensive care unit can significantly impact patients' state anxiety.

Araştırma Koroner Yoğun Bakim Ünitesinde yatan hastaların deneyimleri ve bunları etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla Haziran 2018-Ocak 2020 tarihleri arasında bir üniversite hastanesinin Koroner Yoğun Bakım Ünitesinde yapılmıştır. Araştırma evreni ilgili ünitede tedavi ve bakım hizmeti alan hastalar oluşturmuş, örneklemine ise araştırmaya alınma kriterlerine uyan 166 hasta alınmıştır. Araştırma verilerinin toplanmasında, hasta tanıtım formu, “Yoğun Bakım Deneyim Ölçeği” ve “Hastane Anksiyete ve Depresyon Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen verilerin analizinde SPSS 21 paket programı kullanılmıştır. Hastaların “Yoğun Bakım Deneyim Ölçeği” ve ölçek alt boyutlarından aldıkları puan ortalamaları incelendiğinde “Çevrenin Farkında Olma” 17,95±3,20, “Yaşanan Kötümser Deneyimler” 17,75±1,59, “Yaşanan Deneyimlerin Hatırlanması” 11,16±4,23, “Alınan Bakımdan Memnuniyet” 10,13±2,71 ve ölçek toplamında 57,01±6,45 puan aldıkları saptanmıştır. Hastalar “Hastane Anksiyete ve Depresyon Ölçeği” nin anksiyete alt boyutundan 8,72±4,59, depresyon alt boyutundan 7,17±3,15 puan almıştır. Araştırma sonucunda kroner yoğun bakım hastalarının orta düzeyde olumsuz deneyime sahip olduğu ve anksiyete ve depresyon düzeylerinin ise düşük olduğu belirlendi.

The effect of environmental stressors perceived by surgical intensive care unit patients on hopelessness level

The aim of the research was to determine the effects of environmental stressors perceived by patients hospitalized in the surgical intensive care unit on hopelessness level. This descriptive research was performed between September 2023 and February 2024. The population of the study included all adult patients hospitalized in the Surgical Intensive Care Clinic of a City Hospital in Eastern Türkiye. The sample of the study includes 230 patients selected by random sampling method from this population. We used Personal Information Form, Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressors Scale (ICUESS) and Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation analysis tests were used to evaluate the data. The ICUESS mean score of the patients participated in the study was found to be at a high level with 102.13±15.95. Beck hopelessness scale score mean was found to be at a mild level with 6.36±5.78. It was found that the patients' gender, age, educational status, chronic disease status and previous intensive care experience affected the level of hopelessness. The relationship between ICUESS and BHS scores of the patients included in the study was examined and it was found that there was a low level of positive significant relationship between them (r: 0.162, p: 0.014). The hopelessness level of patients in surgical intensive care units was found to increase as the level of exposure to environmental stressors increased. It may be recommended to identify environmental stressors affecting the hopelessness level of patients and to implement interventions to reduce them.
