Cyclodextrins (CyDs) are cyclic carbohydrates derived from starch. The parent CyDs contain six, seven and eight glucopyranose units and are referred as a-, b-and g-CyD, respectively. The most important property of the CyDs is the ability to establish specific interactions -molecular encapsulation -with various types of molecules through the formation of noncovalently bonded entities, either in the solid phase or in aqueous solution. These nano-encapsulating agents may form inclusion complexes with essential oils and volatiles, or their components, in order to improve their characteristics, such as transformation of liquid compounds into crystalline form; masking unpleasant smells and tastes of some compounds; improving the physical and/or chemical stability; and stabilizing volatile compounds by reducing or eliminating any losses through evaporation. Complexation has been used to avoid the destruction of certain flavours by processing or, on storage, allowing the use of minor amounts of flavours. The guest molecule is released in the warm moisture of the mouth. Examples are spices, essential oils of vegetable origin and plant flavours, chamomile oil and extract, eucalyptus oil, fennel oil, lemon oil, onion and garlic oil, camphor, menthol, thymol, etc. There are several methods for the preparation of inclusion complexes; kneading, co-precipitation, freeze-drying and spray-drying the most commonly used. Evidence for a guest inclusion into the apolar CyD cavity may be proved by various analytical techniques, including NMR spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism, fluorescence, infrared/FT-IR spectroscopy, thermo-analysis, TLC, mass spectromety, and powder X-ray diffractometry.

During the past few decades, supercritical fluid (SCF) has emerged as an effective alternative for many traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Operating active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) alone or in combination with various biodegradable polymeric carriers in high-pressure conditions provides enhanced features with respect to their physical properties such as bioavailability enhancement, is of relevance to the application of SCF in the pharmaceutical industry. Herein, recent advances in drug delivery systems manufactured using the SCF technology are reviewed. We provide a brief description of the history, principle, and various preparation methods involved in the SCF technology. Next, we aim to give a brief overview, which provides an emphasis and discussion of recent reports using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) for fabrication of polymeric carriers, for applications in areas related to drug delivery, tissue engineering, bio-imaging, and other biomedical applications. We finally summarize with perspectives.

Inclusion complex of curcumin with β-cyclodextrin (Cur-β-CD) was prepared using coprecipitation method. Stoichiometric ratio between curcumin and β-cyclodextrin was found to be 1:2 with an association constant of 3.80 × 10 8 M −2 using Benesi-Hildebrand method. Inclusion complex formation was confirmed by FTIR and DSC analyses. Water solubility of curcumin increased from 0.00122 to 0.721 mg mL −1 with the inclusion complex formation. Release of the inclusion complex from the nanocomposite and conventional poly(N-isopropylacrylamide/sodium alginate hydrogels crosslinked by nanoclay and N,N 0 -methylenebis(acrylamide) (BIS), respectively, were investigated in simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Swelling ratio and cumulative release were dependent on the hydrogel composition and pH. At pH = 1.2, hydrogels showed the lowest release ratio, but at pH = 6.8 highest swelling ratios were attained. The swelling ratio and cumulative release decreased with increasing the nanoclay content in nanocomposite hydrogels. On the contrary, as the ratio of BIS in the conventional hydrogels increased, the swelling ratio and cumulative release increased.
